49. Four and a half years after Britain voted to leave the European Union, the two sides have agreed a post-Brexit free-trade deal. The negations took months, but the British prime minister Johnson said the British public now have everything they were promised. The deal means both sides will continue to be able to trade without tariffs being placed on goods. The two sides also agreed to independent arbitration if either side accuses the other of trying to gain a comparative advantage by washing down regulations. One of the big staking points has been fishing rights. Mr. Johnson said the UK would have what he called prodigious increases in fishing catches because of the deal. But, representatives from the fishermen’s union were skeptical. Holiday makers on either side will now need a visa. There will be a new point space system for immigration in Britain which the government says will put would-be migrants outside the EU on an equal footing with Europeans. Britain is also ending its involvement in the exchange program for European universities and its opening student taxes to colleges around the world. The president of the European commission Lion said the deal was fair and the EU would continue cooperating with the UK in areas of mutual interests like climate change, but he told Europeans now was the time to leave Brexit behind. The Irish prime minister Mutton said the deal was a good compromise which would avoid a hard border with Northern Island. |
