For too many, nothing is bright. And for too many, they are not sleeping peacefully." Now, speaker Pelosi says she will ask for a roll call though on Monday to put lawmakers on the record. Amongst long NPR investigation has found the New Jersey Department of Health's decision to evacuate a senior living facility in early days of the coronavirus pandemic was rushed and flawed. NPR's Dina Temple-Raston reports, the move led to the deaths of nearly half of the people there evacuated. An NPR investigation found that when New Jersey officials ordered the evacuation of St Joseph's Senior Home in Woodbridge back in March, it failed to sufficiently take into account the fragility of the evacuees, and how complicated it would be to transfer them to a new facility 45 minutes away. Officials also gave short *** to possible alternatives, spending, for example, only 2 days looking for more staff for the home. The consequences of the evacuation decision were dark - nearly half of the 78 people loaded on the ambulance buses on March 25th, died a short time later. Some within days. Pope Francis celebrated the *** Christmas Eve Mass in a nearly empty St Peter's Basilica, in accordance with Covid-19 safety measures. NPR's Sylvia Poggioli reports, about 100 people were present, compared to the usual 10,000. The ceremony began 2 hour earlier than usual to allow the few who attended to return home before the evening curfew. In his harmony Pope Francis turned to a themed deer to him praised those who he called "*** of society". "The son of God was born in outcast." Francis said, "In order to tell us that every outcast is a trial of God." The Pope went on to say that everyone should reflect on our justice toward so many of our brothers and sisters, instead of pursuing our endless desire for possessions. *** week another new low in terms of mortgage interests rate, mortgage giant Freddie Mac's announcing today the average rate on a 30-year-fixed-rate-mortgage has dropped 2.66% this week. It's the 16th recorded drop up so far this year. *** rate at 3.74% just a year ago. The average rate on a 15-year-mortgage now stands 2.19%.
Crude oil futures prices ended the day modestly higher. Oil's up 18 cents a barrel to settle at $48.30 a barrel in New York.
