President-elect Joe Biden unveiled additional details of his plan to vaccinate 100 million people, during his first 100 days in office. Biden noting the seriousness of the corona virus pandemic as the global death toll from covid-19 surpassed the 2million mark. He also said he’ll use the Defense Production Act to speed up the vaccine roll-out.
“        There are tens of millions of doses of vaccines sitting unused in freezers around the county, while people who want and need the vaccine can't get it, we’ll fix the problem by encouraging states to allow more people to get vaccinated beyond health care workers."

Biden’s called the Trump administration roll-out of the vaccine “a dismal failure”, he also noted despite the expanded effort which include billions of vaccines distribution sites and additional testing, things will get worse before they get better. And he criticized some republican law makers refused to wear a mask during last week’s riot at the capitol.

The National Rifle Association says it is declaring bankruptcy and leaving New York for Texas. Here’s NPR’s Martin Kaste.

The powerful gun rights group has been dogged in recent years by fallout from a scandal over the misuse of funds, and last year the New York state Attorney General sued the organization and some of its leaders including Wayne LaPierre. Now LaPierre has announced the NRA will leave New York and reincorporate as a non-profit in Texas. The NRA portrayed the investigation as bias and New York’s political atmosphere as toxic. New York Attorney General Letitia James responded with a statement accusing the NRA of being financially and morally bankrupt and the statement says her office is reviewing the implication of the bankruptcy filing, pledging not to allow the NRA to quote evade the accountability. Martin Kaste, NPR news.

US attorney leading the investigation into the capitol rampage says the authority has no direct evidence at this point, the rioters planned to capture or kill US law makers. As NPR’s Ryan Lucas explains a contradicts allegation prosecutors have made in court filings against one alleged rioter.

Federal prosecutors in Arizona alleged in court papers that members of the pro-Trumps mob that stormed the capitol, intended to capture or assassinated elected officials. But now the man leading the investigation into the riot, acting US attorney for Washington DC  Michael Sherwin says that’s not so.
“There’s no direct evidence at this point of kill/capture teams and assassination.”

Sherwin says he’s aware of the filing in Arizona, he attributes the disconnect to the sprawling nature of the investigation. He says in some instances, prosecutors handling preliminary court hearings of alleged capitol rioter arrested elsewhere in the country, maybe adding information that those leading the case back in DC do not possess. Stocks lost ground at week’s end amid concerns on the part of investors the corona virus pandemic continues to weaken the economy. The Dow was down 177 points the NASDAQ fell 114 points today.

President-elect Biden has chosen the former Food and Drug commissioner to lead vaccine science in his drive to put 100 million shots into the arms of Americans during his administration’s first 100 days. Dr. David Kessler will hold the title of chief science officer for covid response, head of the Food and Drug administration in 1990s under presidents of both political parties, Kessler has been acting as a top pandemic adviser to President-elect Biden.

Toyota says it will pay 180 million dollars for violating federal emissions reporting requirements. The environment protection agency says it is the largest civil penalty of its kind, Toyota acknowledged its reporting process was flawed. from NPR’s

Car makers are required to alert the EPA when they discover vehicle defects that could cause their cars to release too many pollutes. From 2005 to 2015 Toyota was not meeting this requirement, for many reports filed late or not filed at all. The US department of Justice says the violation was systemic and likely resulted a financial benefit to Toyota. The company acknowledged the short comings, a Toyota spoke person says while filings were delayed, the impact on actual emissions was negligible. Toyota will be under judicial oversight for 3 years. President Donald Trump prepares to leave Washington DC Wednesday morning just before President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, that’s according to a person familiar with the planning who spoke on condition of anonymity because the decision has not yet been made public. Trump had already announced he would not be attending Biden’s inauguration, the President-elect had made it clear Trump would not be welcomed. Trump spent the month pushing baseless claims of election frauds.

The incoming Biden administration has announced its plan to rewrap the coronavirus vaccine rollout. As NPR's Selena Simmons-Duffin reports, the president-elect wants to put billions of dollars toward community vaccination sites and mobile units. For the first year of the pandemic, state and local leaders received only 330 million dollars to plan and build an infrastructure for the distribution of a future Covid-19 vaccine. Now that the vaccines are here, the rollout is perhaps predictably going slowly. Congress allocated 9 billion dollars for vaccine distribution at the end of 2020, Biden wants to put an additional 20 billion dollars to the effort. The national plan also includes 50 billion dollars for testing, a tripling of the community health workforce and investment in viral surveillance. The need for that has been made clear by the new variants being identified in the UK, South Africa and elsewhere. Selena Simmons-Duffin, NPR news.

Amid warnings from the FBI of threats of armed protest by supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump in Washington DC and elsewhere, number of national guard troops coming to the nation's capital is now being up to around 26,000. And many of those troops will be armed. The FBI has issued warning about possible protest and conjunction with Biden's inauguration next week, not only in DC but also in state capitals across the country. At the latest security threat coupled with rising number of coronavirus cases in Washington, mayor Muriel Bowser has urged people not to come to the inauguration and stay home.

President-elect Biden is tabbing former South Carolina senate candidate Jamie Harrison the Head of Democratic National Committee. Harrison who began his political career as an aid to South Carolina Congressman James Clyburn, replaces current DNC chair Tom Perez. Here's NPR's Scott Detrow. A source close to the decision confirmed tapped NPR, Harrison galvanized Democrats across the country and got them to open up their wallets in his senate race against Republican Lindsey Graham last year. Harrison fell short but along with Democratic success in neighboring Georgia, his effort highlighted the parties increased focus on mobilizing black voters who may have previously set out down ballot races. Harrison was Head of the South Carolina Democratic Party before becoming associate chairman of the national party. He will replace Tom Perez who took control of the DNC when it was in tatters, following Hillary Clinton's 2016 loss, and an email hack that made the party's private emails public. Surging applications for first-time jobless benefits last week is confirming what many economists have been saying, namely new surge in coronavirus cases is causing companies to lay off workers. Labor Department reporting first-time claims for unemployment benefits last week jumped by 181,000 to 965,000.

On Wall Street today stocks closed lower. The Dow was down 68 points. The NASDAQ fell 16 points today.

Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been hospitalized in Monte Carlo for health problems, NPR's Sylvia Poggioli reports, the 84-year-old tycoon had previously undergone heart surgery and survived prostate cancer. Berlusconi's private doctor Umberto Scapagnini told the Italian news agency answer that he saw Berlusconi on Monday and had him transferred to a nearby hospital because he didn't think it prudent to bring him to Italy only 10 miles from Monte Carlo. In September Berlusconi was hospitalized in Milan after contracting Covid-19, an experience he described as "the most dangerous challenge of my life". The former prime minister remains head of a right-wing opposition party. His illness comes as Italy plunged into political chaos after a junior member of the governing coalition quit the government. There has been speculation that some of Berlusconi's lawmakers might help prop up the government to prevent earlier elections. Sylvia Poggioli, NPR news, Rome.

Search engine company Google says it has completed a 2.1 billion dollars acquisition of wearable fitness tracking maker Fitbit, competition or completion of the acquisition comes 14 months after Google announced the deal which immediately raised alarms. Google makes most of its money selling ads based on information. It collects about user interest and whereabouts, something privacy watchdog worries the company would do even to greater extent, with the information it could obtain from Fitbit under the company's 29 million users. Wearable devices track everything from a person's level of activities, the sleep patterns to the food that they consumed.

Oil closed up 66 cents a barrel today in New York.
