Music from an online church service today honoring the late doctor Martin Luther King Junior’s life and legacy in his hometown in Atlanta, officiated by king’s daughter Bernice King, she put it how much has changed in the past year, in terms of both the global corona virus pandemic and 9 violence and hate speech. King saying those events call for some soul searching about where we are.
“There is a serious need right now for some introspection and examination into our social climate not just in our country, but in other nations throughout the world. Humanity beckons us all across the globe with a sense of urgency to shift in this hour, to save the very soul of our world.”
Also honoring king’s legacy today were president- elect Joe Biden and vice president-elect Kamala Harris who participated in service day projects, Biden wife Jill joined a group in Philadelphia preparing food boxes.
The Trump appointed director of the US census bureau was stepping down from the agency’s top job ,NPR’s reports the upcoming departure comes after whistle blowers at the bureau warned the director tried to rush out a report about non-citizens before the end of the Trump administration.
Census bureau director Steven Dillingham says he is retiring on Wednesday more than 11 months before his term expires at year’s end. Last week the Bureau’s Watchdog revealed that whistleblowers reported Dillingham for trying to pressure civil servants into producing a technical report related to Trump’s executive order for citizenship data, a career official at the bureau warned the report will be statistically indefensible. Dillingham backed off after his directive became public, the bureau’s career deputy director Ron Jarmin will fill in as acting director, as the agency continues preparing the first 2020 census results which are expected in March. The FBI's arrested a rural New Mexico county commissioner for his alleged role in the US Capitol riot. NPR’s Kirk Siegler reports, Couy Griffin founded the far-right group Cowboys for Trump.
Griffin was arrested Sunday in Washington DC on the charge of breaching the US Capitol. He posted videos to Facebook with the alarming language including one read suggested that blood could be running out of the building. Last week during a county commission meeting in New Mexico, Griffin repeated a baseless right wing conspiracy, that China stole the election from President Trump, and then listed the guns he planned to bring to DC.
“I’ve got a 357 Henry lever action, that I've got in the trunk of my car and I've got a 357 single action, that I'll have underneath the front seat on my right side.”
Court documents noted the fact that Griffin planned to bring fire arms to the inauguration. Kirk Siegler NPR news.

Portugal has tightened its corona virus restrictions just 3 days after imposing its first lockdown since last spring. As new cases and death associated with covid-19 have soared to record levels. Allison Roberts reports from Lisbon officials have warned many people are not observing the existing lockdown.
Portugal situation is very critical and its health system is closed to the limit according to officials. In recent days it has had the world’s highest new case rate relative to population, and the second highest number of covid death. Since Friday remote working has been compulsory where feasible and non-essential stores are closed. But now anyone travelling to work must carry a note from their employer and large employers must submit a list of those whose presence is essential. Even food retailers' hours are being curtailed and many public spaces will be off-limits, but the government defied calls from the opposition and doctors' groups to close schools. For NPR news I’m Allison Roberts in lisbon.
International Energy Agency is accusing big oil and gas companies of not doing enough to control the release of methane, a potent source of plant heating emissions. That’s according to report published by the Paris based agency the IEA says while there was a 10%drop in methane emissions from oil and gas producers last year, it was largely due to a global decline in demand due to the corona virus pandemic rather than to any major actions taken by the companies themselves to reduce the emissions. The group warned the emissions are likely to rebound again as the economies recover from the pandemic.
while US financial markets are closed today, oil was trading globally, oil down slightly to 50209 a barrel with no settlement due to the holiday.
