The Senate narrowly voted to begin debating a 1.9 trillion dollar corona virus relief package with democrats making some eleventh-hour changes aimed to ensuring the measure, makes it through a divided chamber, Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer says the time for action is now.

“This legislation will keep America’s families, businesses workers afloat. And hasting the day, when our country can return to normal and our economy can come roaring back.”

But republicans say democrats are ramming through the package on behalf of the Biden administration what South Carolina’s Lindsey Graham called an abandonment of bipartisanship.

“The inaugural speech rings hollow when it comes to this provision, the 1.9 covid package. Everything President Biden said he wanted to do for the country, he abandoned.”

Still democrats with the razor-thin majority in the Senate hope to get to the final measure to the House before next week.

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey is keeping her state’s mask mandate through the beginning of April, but Detroit public radio Kael reports the Governor says this is the last time she will extend it.

Ivey says requiring Alabamians to wear masks has helped to lower the rate of new corona virus infections by 82% from its highest levels in January. So she says Alabamians still need to wear the mask through Easter, and then:”let me be abundantly clear, after April the 9th, I will not keep the mask order in effect.”Even though Alabama’s holding onto its mask requirement longer than other states, health experts like Doctor Anthony Fauci have advised that Americans may need to keep wearing the mask through 2022. Alabama currently has one of the lowest vaccination rates in the country. For NPR news, I’m Kale in Montgomery.

The CIA says it has established a task force looking into the so-called Havana syndrome, the mystery ailment that’s hit dozens of US officials abroad in recent years. As NPR’s Greg Miry explains officials have suffered chronic migraines, dizziness and memory loss.

The CIA says the task force will work with other government agencies to further investigate the cause of ailments so server they forced some officers to retire. A report commissioned by the state department said last December, that microwave radiation is the most plausible cause. More than 40 diplomats and a smaller number of intelligence officers have suffered symptoms in Cuba, China and Russia and suspected a foreign spy agency is to blame. President Biden’s nominee to lead the CIA William Burns said in his confirmation hearing last week, that he would make it a priority to find out who was responsible. Greg Miry NPR news Washington.

Stocks lost ground on Wall Street, the Dow down 345 points, the NASDAQ closed down 274 points today.

The US is agreeing to suspend millions of dollars worth of trade tariffs on a variety of UK exports, including scotch whiskey as part of an effort to resolve a long-running trans-Atlantic trade dispute over aerospace subsidies. Two countries in a joint statement today saying Washington will suspend the tariffs for 4 months, dispute centered around aid for Boeing and Airbus. Others likely to benefit includes Scottish cashmere producers, pig farmers and makers of Stilton cheese.

In New Zealand emergency authorities are warning of a tsunami threat after 3 severe earthquakes there, the most recent was an 8.0 magnitude quake some 500 miles northeast of New Zealand. Anna Fifield has more.
New Zealand emergency management agency directed people living along parts of the east coast of the country’s north island to immediately evacuate to higher ground. New Zealand is on an active fault line and large earthquakes are not uncommon. But this event is being treated as particularly server, because it was the third in a quick serious of quakes over magnitude 7. The national emergency management agency told residents in certain areas that a damaging tsunami is possible, and instructed them to evacuate even if they didn’t feel the earthquake. People in those areas are now heading inland and up hills, with traffic jams reported on some roads. For NPR news, this is Anna Fifield in Wellington.

Crude oil futures’ prices took a another big bump up today after OPEC members agreed to leave most of their production cuts in place, oil rising 2dollars and 55 cents a barrel to 63.83 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
