The Biden administration would allow Venezuelans who are already in the US illegally to remain in the country for now, NPR’s Frank O'Donnell reports President Biden is carrying out a campaign promised to shield more than 300,000 Venezuelans from deportation.

The Biden administration says it’s granting Venezuelans in the United States temporary protected status for 18 months, because of the current humanitarian and economic crisis in their country, Benjamin Gedan who was the top adviser on Venezuela in the Obama White House says there’s long been bipartisan support for permitting Venezuelans already in the US, to remain here legally.

“Venezuela is a failed state in every single measure, there’s simply not enough food to go around, hospitals had collapsed before the pandemic, bureaucracy dictatorship and extraordinary levels of violence in the street.”

He said it was just inhumane to send people back into those conditions. Frank O'Donnell NPR news .

The judge overseeing the case of the former Minneapolis police officer accused of killing George Floyd by kneeing on the black man’s neck, paused the start of jury selection today pending an appeal.
Lawyers representing Derek Chauvin were appealing over the possible reinstatement of a third degree murder charge in the case. Judge Peter Cahill said he lacked a jurisdiction to rule on whether the charge should be reinstated. Chauvin is charged with second degree murder and manslaughter in Floyd’s death, legal experts say reinstating the third degree charge will improve the odds of getting a conviction, Chauvin’s lawyer wants the supreme court to review the matter.

New York State’s Attorney General’s appointing two attorneys to lead an investigation into the sexual harassment and misconduct accusations facing Governor Andrew Cuomo, NPR’s Hansi Lo Wang reports Cuomo has said he is not stepping down despite growing calls for his resignation.

The investigation is led by Joon Kim, a former top federal prosecutor in Manhattan and Anne Clark, an attorney who specializes in discrimination cases, they’ll lead a team who analyze documents and conduct interviews under oath to repair a report that would be made public. Over the weekend as reported by the Wall Street Journal and Washington Post, two more women came forth with allegations of inappropriate behavior by Governor Andrew Cuomo. Cuomo has pushed back against the accusations. The Governor is also under a separate investigation into whether his administration was dishonest about how many people living in nursing homes died from covid-19. Hansi Lo Wang NPR news New York.

Two more men wanted in connection with the deadly riot at the US Capitol have been arrested including one who reportedly served as a body guard to former President Donald Trump’s long time confidant Roger Stone. The FBI today saying Roberto Minuta and Isaac Steve Sturgeon were taken into federal custody. Minuta is accused of breaching the grounds of the Capitol and berating police. According to previous reports by New York Times, Minuta provided security to Stone in the hours before the attack.

A mixed close on Wall Street today, the Dow was up 306 points, the NASDAQ fell 310 points today.

Pope Francis has returned to the Vatican after taking a four-day visit to Iraq. NPR’s Sylvia Poggioli reports the pontiff says he carefully the weighed the risk of making the trip during the corona virus pandemic.

Francis listened to the horrors ISIS terrorists inflicted on an ancient Christian community. One main motivation for the trip he said was a book he read about ISIS’s persecution of the Yazidi minority. He was left speechless by the rubble of the churches the terrorists destroyed, saying it’s impossible to believe the extent of human cruelty. Asked about meeting one of the world’s top Shiah religious leaders the Grand Ayatollah Ali al Sistani, Francis said he’s a wise man of God and the encounter was a step towards brotherhood among peoples. The pontiff said his critics say he’s irresponsible one step from heresy, but the pope added” you often have to take risks”. Sylvia Poggioli NPR news Rome.

Oprah Winfrey’s exclusive interview last night with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle has left people divided, at the same time the interview has left Buckram Palace reeling as it struggles to modernize the accusations of racism and callousness. During the interview the duchess described feeling so isolated inside the Royal family she began having suicidal thoughts. Harry for his part reviewed problems experienced by the couple’s ruptured relations with his father Prince Charles and brother Prince William. The couple stepped back from the Royal Family last year and settled in California.

Crude oil futures ‘prices moved lower today, oil down a dollar and 4 cents a barrel to end the session at 65.05 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
