01. NPR news in Washington, I'm Jack spear. Senior American intelligence officials say Al Qaeda will likely build the capacity to threaten the US homeland from Afghanistan, within the next two years. NPR’s Ryan Lucas says the assessment follows the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan after the US withdraw. That projected one to two year timeline for al Qaeda to reconstitute in Afghanistan, and develop the capability to threaten the US is conservative, according to top officials from the Defense Intelligence Agency and the CIA. One of those officials CIA deputy director David Cohen says the agency has already seen some indications of al Qaeda moving to Afghanistan. The country served as a safe haven for al Qaeda the last time the Taliban were in power in the 1990s up through the US invasion following 911. The US withdrawal from Afghanistan has complicated efforts to combat terrorist groups inside the country. But officials say they remain focused on countering the threat. 02. Pfizer expects to know the results of a study of its COVID-19 vaccine in children five to 11 years old by months end. As NPRs Joe Palca explains the company says additional results from even younger children should be available later this year. The FDA has given full approval to Pfizer to use its vaccine in people older than 16 and has granted emergency use authorization for using the vaccine in children 12 to 15. The company says it plans to seek similar authorization for children five to 11 in October, and if there are positive results from ongoing clinical studies that authorization could be extended to children as young as six months. Moderna is also testing its COVID vaccine in children, but for now its vaccine is only available to people older than 18, Joe Palca NPR News.

03. Communities along the Texas Gulf Coast are assessing the damages from Hurricane Nicolas. Florian Martin of Houston public media reports from Galveston where residents called it a relatively minor storm by that city standards. Parts of Galveston Island saw flooding, including the streets in the city's historic center, strong winds took down some trees and traffic signs, and a large part of the island had its power knocked out, but many residents have lived through much more devastating storms. Jackson Allman was checking on one of his rental properties in the island center, “I think the winds were a little higher than I expected. Yeah, I think the island seen way worse so I think everybody's just happy that they walked out and they, the damage was minimal compared to what's come through”. On the beach side strong winds took the roof off of a Sonic Drive-in and damaged several fishing piers, I'm Florian Martin in Galveston.

05. The Delta variant of the Coronavirus is back in China after strict lockdowns and quarantines managed to contain a small previous outbreak just last month. NPR’s Emily Fang reports authorities are now scrambling again to locate and quarantine all infected people at all costs.More than 200 cases of the highly contagious Delta variant had been discovered in southern Fujian Province. Authorities have locked down the entire city where the first cluster was found. They say the variant was brought in from a Chinese parent traveling back from Singapore in August, after which he did three weeks quarantine in China and tested negative repeatedly. But from there he infected his child who infected other students, parents, and workers at a nearby factory. 06.  The Pennsylvania Turnpike is known for its high tolls, however it appears at least a big chunk of that money went uncollected last year. Turnpike records show upwards of $104 million in tolls went uncollected as the agency fully converted to an all electronic system. According to turnpike records the millions of Americans without Easy Pass have nearly a one in two chance of using the roadway without paying under a toll by plate system. about 10,000 Pennsylvania vehicle registrations have been suspended for non payment of tolls, but that does not apply to out-of-state drivers.
