A well-known statue at Hong Kong University which commemorate the Tianmen Square massacre of pro-democracy demonstrators in Beijing in 1989 has been dismantled and removed by construction workers in the dead of night. China forbids any public recognition of the massacre. The works’ Danish sculptor likened the statue’s destruction to the desecration of gravestones.

The UN Security Council has unanimously approved an American proposal to get humanitarian aid to the 23 million Afghans said to be in desperate need of help. The resolution allows aid to flow into Afghanistan for one year without violating international sanctions aimed at isolating the Taliban who seized power in August.  

More European countries are tightening coronavirus restrictions as the continent again becomes the center of the pandemic. Spain has announced plans to make the wearing of facemasks outdoors compulsory again before Christmas. Other countries including Belgium have announced new measures to try to stop the spread of the omicron variant.

A former president of Tunisia * has received a four-year jail sentence in absentia. He now lives in Paris. A lawyer for Mr. * said that she did not know why he had been sentenced but the state news agency said it was for harming the external security of the state. * recently criticized the President * seizure of power in July.  

Ukrainian government forces and Russia-back separatists have agreed to restore a ceasefire in eastern Ukraine. Moscow and Kiev have blamed each other for multiple violations of a previous truce signed last year. Tensions remain high in the region over a buildup of Russian troops on its border with Ukraine.  

A jury in the United States deliberating on the sex trafficking trial of the British socialite * has not yet reached a verdict and will reconvene after Christmas. Miss. Maxwell denies grooming girls for abuse by Jeffrey Epstein.
