The Foreign Office in London says it has information that the Kremlin is looking to install a pro-Russian leader in Kiev as it considers whether to invade the occupied Ukraine. It says a former Ukrainian MP Yevhen Murayev is being considered as a potential candidate. Britain named 4 other former Ukrainian politicians which it says have linked to the Russian intelligence services.

The head of the German navy has resigned following controversial remarks he made about Ukraine. Kay-Achim Schoenbach said the idea that Moscow wanted to invade Ukraine was nonsense and said what President Putin really wanted was respect.

A battle is continuing for a 3rd day in Syria between Islamic State militants and Kurdish forces guarding a prison where thousands of Jihadists are held. More than 75 people, most of them Jihadists, are reported to have been killed in 3 days of fighting in the northern city of Hasakeh.

Four people who were murdered during El Salvador’s civil war have been beatified at a colorful ceremony in the capital San Salvador. The four, 2 priests and 2 laymen, were killed by right-wing death squads more than 4 decades ago.

A senior Ethiopian general says the army is trying to enter Mekelle, the capital of the Tigray region. General Abebaw Tadesse said there will be no negotiations with rebels there. Last month, the Ethiopian Prime Minister called for a national reconciliation.

A court in Turkey has ordered the well-known journalist to be jailed ahead of a trial on charges of insulting president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Sedef Kabas denies the charge.

A 75-year-old French man who was attempting to row across the Atlantic Ocean in an 8-meter canoe has been found dead at sea. Jean-Jacques Savin had previously made the crossing in a large barrel in 2019.
