The capital of Burkina Faso is under curfew after a dramatic day which began with gunfire from angry soldiers. Protestors came out in support of the mutiny, burning down the headquarters of the ruling NPP Party. The soldiers are demanding the replacement of military chiefs and more help in their campaign against the intensifying Islamist insurgency.

The World Health Organization’s European Director says the Continent could be moving towards the end of the coronavirus pandemic after the Omicron wave. But he warned it was difficult to predict how the virus would devolve, and that Covid will still be present in the future.

International nursing organizations are warning a chronic shortage of nurses around the world has been made worse by the pandemic. A new report says issues of underfunding, staff shortages, and burnout must be addressed to avoid a global healthcare disaster. It estimates that 13 million new nurses will be needed over the next decade.

A major British investment fund says it will vote to try to get directors kicked out of firms that failed to make good on environmental pledges. Aviva investors set out its expectations in a letter that wll be sent to 15,000 firms in 30 countries this week.

Representatives of the Taliban have held talks with Afghan civil society activists in Oslo as part of a 3-day meeting to discuss the humanitarian crisis. A Taliban leader described the talks as constructive. On Monday the Taliban delegation will meet western diplomats who will press for a more inclusive government.

There have been warnings of a more deepening political crisis in Honduras after the election of 2 rival speakers for Congress. The dispute has split the party of the President-elect Xiomara Castro.
