Ukraine's foreign minister said the situation in the besieged port Mariupol is dire and heartbreaking, with Russian forces determining to take it at any cost. In a CBS news interview, Dmytro Kuleba said the Russians have chosen to raze the city to the ground.

Ukrainian officials say five people were killed in Russian shellings of the city Khariv and other two in the town Shostka. And in Mykolaiv near the port Odessa, the governor said there has been continuing rocket attacks.

For the first time since the start of war in Ukraine, Polish migration figures indicate more people are returning to the country through Poland than now leaving. Increasing numbers are returning since Russian forces withdrew from territory north of the capital Kiev.

Clashes are taking place for a fourth day in a number of Swedish cities sparked by an apparently burning of a Quran by a far-right anti-immigrant group. Local media said three people were injured in the eastern city Norrköping, when police fired warning shots at rioters.

And officials in South Africa say the number of people died as the result of floods in KwaZulu-Natal province has raised to 443. More than 13,000 homes have been damaged.
