Palestinian officials say fighting between security forces loyal to President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas militants in the West Bank has killed six people. The violence erupted Sunday when Mr.Abbas's Fatah-dominated police force raided a house to arrest two senior militants. The sides exchanged fire for several hours in a battle that killed three policemen, both Hamas men and a supporter who was in the house. One of the militants was a leader of Hamas's military wing who has been on an Israeli wanted list. It was the deadliest Palestinian infighting in the West Bank since the Western-backed Palestinian president launched a security drive against militants there in 2007. Earlier that year, Hamas seized power in the Gaza Strip from Mr. Abbas's forces.

Israel began a five-day long civil defense drill Sunday designed to prepare the Jewish state for the worst possible war scenario. Code named “Turning Point Three” the military exercises will determine Israel's response capability and the battle preparedness of its soldiers, emergency crews and civilians. The drill occurs at a time when Israel is experiencing rising tensions with its Arab neighbors. Several Arab states have expressed concern that “Turning Point” is a cover for a military strike. Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak has denied those allegations.

Pakistan’s Defense Secretary says government troops will complete their operations against Taliban fighters in the Swat Valley and neighboring areas in the northwest within the next two or three days. Secretary of Defense Syed Athar Ali told an annual meeting of defense officials in Singapore on Sunday that only five or ten percent of the operation in Swat, Buner and adjoining areas remains incomplete, but Ali expressed concern about the failure of coalition forces to create stability across the border in Afghanistan. The Afghan military says at least 30 Taliban militants and 9 Afghan soldiers have died in two days of fighting in northwestern Afghanistan. The Afghan Defense Ministry said the deaths occurred on Friday and Saturday as Afghan forces backed by international forces tried to secure an area of Badghis province.

Some detainees from the U.S. military detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba could end up in Europe, but if they do, Italy’s Interior Minister says it will only be after European Union members agree to it. Sabina Castelfranco is in Rome with the story.

Addressing reporters at a press conference at the end of the two-day Group of Eight summit, Italy's Interior Minister Roberto Maroni said the detainees from the U.S. military prison on the Cuban island should be sent only to countries that are able to jail them again.

He said the European Union must reach a unanimous decision and welcome, if they decide to do so, those that can be put back in prison. Otherwise, he added, what will happen is that the inmates, once escorted out of airports, will be able to freely move across the porous national borders of several EU countries and this is not acceptable. The European Union says it is at risk of terrorist attacks because of its so-called Schengen zone - an area in which no systematic passport checks are carried out. He said that while no concrete decisions were made at the G-8 summit, they will discuss the issue again at a ministerial meeting in Luxembourg June 4-5. Sabina Castelfranco for VOA News, Rome.

Burma says it had no choice but to prosecute detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi for sheltering an American man who made an uninvited visit to her lakeside home. Burma’s deputy Defense Minister, Major General Aye Myint said Sunday that Aung San Suu Kyi, in his words, committed a cover-up of the truth by her failure to report an illegal immigrant to the authorities.

Iranian security officials said they defused a homemade bomb found on a domestic airline flight from Ahvaz to Tehran. Authorities said Sunday the Kish Air flight returned to the Ahvaz Airport where the bomb was disarmed. Iranian media reports said the bomb was discovered minutes after the flight took off with 131 passengers on board.
