It's 15: 00 Universal Time, and here is the news from the Voice of America.
I'm David DeForest from the VOA News Center in Washington.

An Air France passenger plane carrying 228 passengers and crew is reported missing over the Atlantic Ocean. Tom Rivers reports from London the jet was on a night flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris.

The Air France Airbus 330, 200-series reportedly hit bad weather. According to the airline, a number of data messages from flight 447 were sent out about 15 minutes later indicating an electrical problem. At a news conference in Paris, an Air France spokesman described that specific chain of events.

"The plane went through turbulence and then a number of automatic messages were transmitted by the aircraft to say that there was a fault. Around 7: 00 Paris time, it was clear that the plane was in deep trouble. "

A government source in Brazil says the plane disappeared from Brazilian radar screens around three-and-a-half hours into the flight. Brazilian air force planes on the island of Fernando de Noronha have been searching for the airliner. France's ambassador to the West African country of Senegal says French military planes there have also joined in the search. Tom Rivers for VOA News, London.

The US automaker General Motors filed for bankruptcy today as part of a government-led plan to restructure the one-hundred-year-old company. GM filed for court protection from creditors after spending months trying to restructure its business plan to become profitable. Public reaction to the bankruptcy is mixed.

If they haven t done a good job running the business, they probably need to go under, and produce a product that the public will buy. It is sad, but I think that the only solution, I mean, we see other companies going to bankruptcy before and turn themselves around. Extremely sad, it s an American, you know, heritage and who s gonna be next, I mean, look at all the circumstances so far

Despite receiving about 20 billion dollars in government aid, GM has failed to recover from a drastic drop in car sales. The US government is expected to provide an additional 30 billion dollars to help restructure GM through the largest industrial bankruptcy in US history. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner says the government aid to GM and Chrysler as well is not meant to lead to long-term government control of the companies.

In both these cases, the government has insisted in coming to support restructuring, not to prevent restructuring and our objective is to make sure the minimum involvement, the minimum necessary and then we get out of those involvement as quickly as we can. Senior Obama administration officials say GM could be reorganized within 60 to 90 days.

South Korea President Lee Myung Bak and leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations has called on North Korea to give up its nuclear ambitions and respect United Nations sanctions. President Lee s office said today the leaders called the North's May 25th nuclear test a provocation that seriously undermines peace and stability in the region and the world. The South Korea and ASEAN leaders began a two-day summit meeting today in South Korea to mark 20 years of partnership and boost multilateral cooperation amid the global financial crisis.

U. S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner is reassuring the Chinese government that its huge holdings of dollar assets are safe. Stephanie Ho reports from Beijing.

As evidence of the importance of the Sino-American relationship, China is Secretary Geithner's only destination on this trip. His official duties in Beijing began Monday, with a speech at Peking University, where he attended in 1981. Geithner says it is crucial for the United States and China to work together to effectively combat the global economic downturn.

"How successful we are in Washington and in Beijing will be critically important to the economic fortunes of the rest of the world.

China is the biggest foreign owner of U. S. Treasury bonds. American data shows that China held 768 billion dollars in treasury securities as of March. The English edition of the Beijing-based Global Times newspaper ran an article Monday in which 23 Chinese economists expressed deep concern that American debt poses great risks to the Chinese economy. In response to a student's question about this issue, Geithner said Chinese assets are very safe. Stephanie Ho, VOA News, Beijing.
