Live from NPR news I’m Jack Speer.

Clashes between Israeli troops and Palestinians after Hamas militancy fired more than 150 rockets into Israel, the rocket attack coming after hundreds of Palestinians were hurt in clashes with Israeli police at a flashpoint religious site in contested holly city of Jerusalem. NPR’s Daniel Estrin’s more in the situation there.

We know that after Palestinian rocket fire reached the outskirt of Jerusalem, Israel carried out several strikes. And Palestinian human rights group in Gaza has been tracking them, they say one strike killed 5 people, then another killed 9 then a pair of strike killed 8, and children have been reported killed, many people injured as well. Israeli military is not commenting immediately on reports of civilian deaths, but it does say it targeted 3 militancy.

The food and drug administration is giving permission for the covid-19vaccine made by Pfizer-BioNTech to be used in children as young as 12. More from NPR’s Joe Palca.

In December, FDA granted the Pfizer-BioNTech covid-19 vaccine what’ s known as an emergency use authorization based on results from large clinic trial. But that authorization was only for people as young as 16, at the end of March the company has reported results from a trial of the vaccine in children between the ages of12 and 15, that  study showed that vaccine was 100% effective in preventing disease, and there were no serious side effects. So now the FDA has expanded the authorization to include these younger children as well. Studies are ongoing in children as young as 6 months with results expected later this year. Joe Palca NPR news.

President Biden meanwhile responded positively to the FDA’ move to allow younger people to get the Pfizer shot, speaking at the White House Biden saying response to the announcement “the light at the end of the tunnel is growing, and today it got a little brighter.” Biden called it a promising development in the fight to end the corona virus pandemic noting the vaccine’s successes in older teens and younger adults as well.

Stocks ended lower today as investors await new data on rising prices as NPR’s David Gura reports the NASDAQ had its worst day since March.

The 3 major indexes all ended the day lower, the NASDAQ dropped 2.5% closed at 13,401. The S&P 500 closed down 1% and the Dow which had hit a record high on Monday closed lower, down 1/10 percent. Shares in many tech companies fell. Because of supply issues, lower interest rate and more government spending, prices have started to creep up, this has been a theme as companies have reported earnings. Later this week the federal government will update 2 measures of inflation, CPI and PPI. They show how prices have changed over time. David Gura NPR news New York.

Taking a look at the numbers the Dow dropped 34 points, the NASDAQ was down 350 points today the S&P fell 44points.

The European Union says it will not renew its contract for AstraZeneca vaccines. NPR’s Eleanor Beardsley reports the decision follows a high profile dispute with the pharmaceutical company over its supply of vaccines to the EU.

Thierry Breton the European internal market commissioner said AstraZeneca’s failure to deliver the number of doses agreed in its contract was essentially the reason the EU’s vaccination campaign got off to such a slow start. The EU says AstraZeneca will only deliver a quarter of the vaccine it promised in the first 6months of 2021. Last month the Europe commission launched a legal action against AstraZeneca for not respecting its contract. French president Emmanuel Macron said the Bloc will focus on vaccines from other pharmaceutical companies in the future, European commission just signed contract extension with Pfizer-BioNTech for a potential 1.8 billion doses. Eleanor Beardsley NPR news Paris.
