A coalition of British aid and human rights groups says the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is the worst since Israel first occupied the territory more than forty years ago. In a report today the aid British-based groups called for an end to the Israeli blockade on Gaza, saying the measures taken are illegal under International humanitarian law. The aid groups say the blockade has dismantled the economy and impoverished the population.

 

Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki is urging lawmakers to approve a power-sharing deal intended to end the country's deadly post-election crisis. Addressing legislators before the opening of parliament today, Mr. Kibaki called on them to support a bill that would enshrine the power-sharing deal into law.

 

A Sri Lankan Tamil lawmaker and his driver were killed today in a roadside bomb attack in northern Sri Lanka. K. Sivanesan was a member of the Tamil National Alliance,as a party allied with the rebel Tamil Tigers.

 

Meanwhile an international panel monitoring human rights in Sri Lanka has announced its resigning, saying the government failed to support the process. The International Independent Group of Eminent Persons said today that the Sri Lanka government failed to meet the basic minimum standards pertaining to investigations and inquiries. Meanwhile, Human Rights Watch said in a new report that the Sri Lankan government is responsible for wide-spread abductions and disappearances that are national crisis. Anna Neistat researched the Human Rights Watch report and disputes that position. "In many cases we have proof that before people disappeared, before they went missing, they were last seen in custody of army or navy officers or they were arrested by the police. And since then all traces of them have been lost." The government says many of the people listed as missing went away without informing their family and has mentioned Anna Neistat who researched that Human Rights report disputes the government's claims.
 
Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez is threatening to end his country's trade ties with Columbia, in response to last week's Colombian military raid on a leftist rebel outpost in Ecuador. Mr. Chávez made his threat in Caracas during a joint news conference with / Ecuador's President Rafael Correa. Mr. Chávez sent thousands of Venezuelan troops to Columbia's border but said he is not seeking an armed conflict. However US Defense Secretary Robert Gates says he does not expect fighting to break out between Colombia and Venezuela, and that if it does, he believes the Columbian military can successfully defend its country. VOA's Al Pessin reports.         

 

Secretary Gates was asked about the increased tension on the Colombia-Venezuela border during a news conference on Wednesday.

 

"Relatively little likelihood of a military conflict between them and my further impression is that the Colombians can take care of themselves."

 

Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez announced Sunday he was sending thousands of troops to the border area, but early Wednesday a senior US defense official said "there is not as much to" the Venezuelan military buildup as has been reported. Secretary Gates also expressed his support for the Columbian government and its efforts to deal with the FARC rebels whom he called "terrorists". President Chávez of Venezuela has good relations with FARC leaders and previously tried to mediate between them and the Colombian government. A Colombian military strike on an alleged FARC base in Ecuador on Saturday sparked the current tension. Ecuador's government has protested the attack as a violation of its sovereignty but has not taken any military action. Al Pessin VOA News at the Pentagon.

 

A small explosive device damaged the military recruiting station in New York City's Times Square early today. Police say someone threw the device at the recruiting station several hours before dawn. Police and fire crews cordoned off Times Square and diverted subway trains for several hours, but normal traffic resumed by the start of the morning rush hour and no injuries were reported. This hotel guest said that he heard the explosion.

 

"I heard a big bang and I actually thought it was thunder, look out of the window and didn't see any wrong. And then I see people running and there was a big plume of smoke. It was very loud, extremely loud. It shook the hotel and I was on the 24th floor." Police say someone threw the device at the recruiting station   several hours before dawn. Police and fire crews called up Times Square and adverted subways trans for several hours. The normal traffic resumed by the start of the morning rush hour. And no injuries were reported. This hotel guest had he heard the explosion.

Mr. Chávez made his threat in Caracas during a joint news conference with / Ecuador's President Rafael Correa. Mr. Chávez sent thousands of Venezuelan troops to Columbia's border but said he is not seeking an armed conflict. However US Defense Secretary Robert Gates says he does not expect fighting to break out between Colombia and Venezuela, and that if it does, he believes the Columbian military can successfully defend its country.
