HW
Today's word is contumely, spelt C-O-N-T-U-M-E-L-Y. Contumely is a noun, it means harsh language or treatment arising from hardiness and contempt. It also means an instance of such lnguage or treatment. Here is the word used in a sentence from the New York Time by Ben Brantly. "She occupiedthe outer-margince of a established theater, and * that statice as a * of honor, refusing to join acters accuredit until the late 1980. And often seen * revel in the contumely of the main strain press." English poet Jaffery Charcer wrote about the scene of contumelie, spelt C-O-N-T-U-M-E-L-I-E, in middle English while composing the parson's tale in the late 1300. The word is a borrowing from middle French, where had ealier arrived from the Latin word "contumelia". And has since see wide literaly use. Perhaps its most famous occurence is in Hamlet's "To be or not to be" soliloquy, in which it pronounced |catumli|:"For who would bear the weep * going of time, the prescience wrong, the pride man's contumely." With your word of the day on Peter Sokolousky.
