President Joe Biden toured a corona virus vaccine plant in Michigan today, the President’s visit coming even as some vaccine doses are sitting in warehouses at the moment, their shipment delayed by bad weather. Still the President walked through an area called the freezer farm, which features some 350 freezers that can hold 360,000 doses of vaccine, Biden says the US effort is moving ahead.
“We now at a point, we have seen the average daily number of people vaccinated nearly doubled from the week before I took office, to about 1.7million average per day getting a shot.”
The Biden administration has promised to have enough vaccine to supply all the Americans by the end of July, with plans to get shots into the arms of some 300 million people.
6 million doses of the covid-19 vaccine have been delayed by the nation’s severe weather, but efforts are put to get those out next week, more from NPR’s Richard Harris.
Severe weather prevented people who handle vaccine from getting to work, which slowed packaging shipping and distribution of the medicine. White House covid adviser Andy Slavitt says more than 1 million doses in that backlog are in transit now, and to help get back on track, FedEx and UPS will provide Saturday delivery to vaccine sites that can handle it. Slavitt also called on vaccination centers to extend their hours and to offer more appointments. Next week they will be getting the backlog shipments in addition to the doses they were already expecting. Richard Harris NPR news.
Just a day after a bill banning most abortions in South Carolina were signed into law by Governor Henry McMaster, Federal Court has blocked the measure, as NPR’s Sarah explains, the judge granted a temporary restraining order while the case works its way through the legal system.
The South Carolina law will prohibit abortions with few exceptions. As soon as cardio activity can be detected with an ultra sound, that’s generally several weeks into a pregnancy often before a patient is aware she’s pregnant. Planned Parenthood and a Women’s clinic in Greenville filed an emergency lawsuit， asking a Federal District Court to block the law, they argued that would made abortion inaccessible for most South Carolinians. Several other states have passed similar laws in recent years which also have been enjoined in the courts. Abortion rights opponents hope one of those laws will make its way to the Supreme Court, forcing a challenge to the Roe v. Wade President that legalized abortion. Sarah NPR news.
