Countries in northwestern Europe have started to take stock of the damage caused by unprecedented floods which hit the region this week. Rescue work is still underway. More than 100 people are known to have died. The flood water has also caused widespread material damage.

The United States is facing a resurgence of coronavirus with infections rising 70% in the past week. The Centers for Disease Control warned of a pandemic of the unvaccinated with outbreaks occuring in parts of the country with low vaccination rate such as Florida. Ninety percent of those admitted to hospitals have not been protected against the virus.

The Associated Press news agency in the United States has conducted its own review into voting in Arizona for last year’s presidential election and says it has found fewer than 200 cases have potential fraud out of more than 3 million votes. AP says with so few votes with problem, it’s implausible that the former president Donald Trump won the state as he claims.

The South Africa President has said the people who instigated the pass week’s violence are seeking to overthrow the government. But Cyril Ramaphosa said South Africans wouldn’t allow that to happen. The unrest followed the jailing of his predecessor Jacob Zuma who’s mired in corruption allegations.

Washington has criticized the latest wave of raids against media outlet in Belarus. The State Department said at least 25 organizations have been targeted over the past 4 days. Riots groups say President Alexander Lukashenko was working to eliminate the independent media.

And the US military wants to build a large new radar site in Britain to track targets in deep space. Its range will include the high orbits often used for military satellites. It comes amid growing concerns about an arm race in space.
