This is Steven Ember with VOA Special English holiday program.
Music fills the air, colorful lights shine brightly in windows. Children and adults open gifts from loved ones and friends. These are all Christmas traditions.

Another tradition is snow. Christmas in the northern part of the world comes a few days after the start of winter.
In many places, a blanket of clean and write snow covers the ground on Christmas Day. This is what is meant (met) by a write Christmas. Of course, many places do not yet snow at Christmas. In fact, they may be very warm at the time of the year. People who like snow but live where it is warm can only dream of having a write Christmas. American song writer ** capture this feelings in his song “write Christmas”. It is one of the most popular Christmas songs of all time. The opening words explain why the singer is dreaming of a write Christmas. Most people never heard these words. So they never understand the true meaning of the song. Here is how it starts:

The sun is shining, the grass is green, the arms of palm tree is swaying.
I’ve never seen such a day in B. hills.
But it’s Dec. 24th.
And I’m longing to be up north.
Up north where it is cold and snowy.
Not south where it is warm and sunny.

Over the years, hundreds of singers and musicians have recorded write Christmas. But the version most people still know best was song by **.

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten
And children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmas be white

Song writer ** was born in Russia in 1884. He didn’t celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday. He was Jewish.
But his song celebrates an idea of peace and happiness that anyone, anywhere snowy or not can enjoy.

To all of you, best wishes in this holiday seasons from all of us in VOA Special English. This is Steven Ember.
