The former Secretary-General of the United Nations says there has been what he calls 'gross and systematic humans rights abuses' in western Kenya. Kofi Annan today visited the Rift Valley town of Molo where tens of thousands of people have been displaced by recent fighting, part of the post-election violence that has now taken nearly 700 lives across Kenya. Meanwhile, the International Committee of the Red Cross has sent medical supplies to Kenya's Nakuru Provincial Hospital as the ethnic fighting escalates. Lisa Schlein has more from Geneva.

The recent flare-up of ethnic tension and fighting in Nakuru, the provincial capital of the Rift Valley, has reportedly left at least 16 people dead. Many people have been wounded in the melee. And the International Committee of the Red Cross says an increasing number of casualties is arriving at the hospital. ICRC Spokesman Marcel Izard says his agency has sent enough medical and surgical supplies to Nakuru Provincial Hospital to enable the staff to cope with the growing needs. He says the Red Cross has not sent any doctors to Nakuru because violence only recently erupted there. About one quarter of a million people have been displaced in Kenya following disputed election results at the end of December. The first waves of ethnic violence erupted in Eldoret and in the slums of the capital Nairobi. The situation has calmed down in those areas and has now moved to Nakuru. Lisa Schlein for VOA News, Geneva.

Thousands of Palestinians continued to pour into Egypt from the Gaza Strip since militants destroyed a border barricade three days ago. And today for the first time, hundreds of vehicles made the crossing after a group of militants used a bulldozer to open a new section of the barricade. Palestinians have been streaming into Egypt to buy goods made scarce by a blockade that Israel imposed on the Gaza Strip last week in response to Palestinian rocket attacks on southern Israel.

Coalition forces in Iraq have reportedly captured a key leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq for the northern city of Tikrit. A US military statement says the detainee is believed to be associated with many senior al-Qaeda leaders in Iraq. The statement also says coalition forces killed three terrorists in the operations targeting al-Qaeda networks in the Tigris River Valley. Yesterday, Iraq's prime minister announced a major new offensive against al-Qaeda insurgents in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul. VOA's Deborah Block has more from Baghdad.

Prime Minister Maliki said Friday his government is sending troops to Mosul to fight al-Qaeda in Iraq insurgents. He said the troops are moving to Mosul and the fight there will be decisive with the help of Mosul's population. During an address in the Shiite holy city of Karbala, south of Baghdad, he warned that Iraq's army is now a powerful force. He said an operation center has been established in Nineveh Province for a final war against Al Qaeda and the remnants of the former Saddam Hussein regime. The prime minister did not indicate how many troops are being sent or provide further details. The announcement came after warnings by the US military that Mosul is the last major city where Al Qaeda in Iraq maintains a strong presence. It has largely been driven from Baghdad and other major population centers. Three weeks ago, US and Iraqi forces launched a new assault against al-Qaeda operatives in Diyallah Province, north of the capital. Deborah Block, VOA News, Baghdad.

An American aid worker and her driver have been kidnapped by gunmen in southern Afghanistan's Kandahar Province. The woman was wearing a burka and was on her way to work. According to the provincial governor, she worked for a nongovernmental organization that focuses on agriculture and development. No group has yet claimed responsibility.

Pakistani authorities have raised a state of alertness around their nuclear facilities after a surge of militant attacks. However, the head of the agency that handles Pakistan's nuclear arsenal says there is no conceivable scenario in which Pakistan would fall to al-Qaeda or Taliban-type extremists.

Another shipment of Russian nuclear fuel has arrived in Iran for that country's first atomic power plant. Iran's official news agency says the Bushehr plant in southern Iran has now received 77 tons of uranium fuel rods of the initial supply of 82 tons of fuel they say they will need.
