The former Secretary General of the United Nations says there have been what he calls gross and systematic human rights abuses in western Kenya. Kofi Annan today visited the Refe valley town of Molow where tens of thounsands of people have been displaced by the recent fighting, part of post-election violence that has now taken nearly 700 lives across Kenya. Meanwhile, the International Committee of Red Cross has sent medical supply to the Kenya's Nakolo provincial hospital as the ethnic fighting escalates. Lisa Shrine has more from Geneva.

The recent flareup of the ethnic tension and fighting in Nakolo, the provincial capital of Refe Valey, has reportedly left at least people dead. Many people have been wounded in the melee and the International Committee of Red Cross says an increasing number of casualties is arriving at the hospital. ICRC spokesman I I said his agency has sent enough medical and surgical supply to Acolo's provincial hospital to enable the staff to cope with the growing need. He says Red Cross has not sent any doctors to the Acolo because violence only recently erupted there. About one quarter of a million people had been displaced in Kenya following diputed election resuts at the end of December. The first wave of ethnic violence erupted in La, and in the slums of the capital of Nairobi. The siution has calmed down in those areas and has now moved to Nakolo. Thousands of Palestinians continued to poure into Egypt from the Gaza strip since militants distroyed a border barricade three days ago and today for the first time hundreds of vehicles made the crossing after a group of miltants used the bulldozer to open a new section of the barriercade. Palestinians had been streaming into Egypt to buy goods made scarce by a blocade of Israel -imposed on the Gaza strip last week in respose to palestinian rock atacks on southern Israel.

Coaltion forces in Iraq have reportedly captured a key leader of Al-Qaeda in Iraq for the northern city of Tigrit. The US military statement says the detainee is believed to be associated with many senior Al-Qaeda leaders in Iraq. The statment alos says coalition forces killed three terrorists in the operations targeting Al-Qaeda networks in Tigris's river vally.

Yesterday Iraqi prime minister announced a major new offensive against Al-Qaeda insurgents in the northern city of Mozol. VOA's D B has more from Baghdad.

Prime minister M said Friday his government is sending troops to Mozol to fight Al-Qaeda-in-Iraq insurgents. He said the troops are moving to Mozol and the fight there will be decisive with the help of the Mozol population. During an address in the Shiite holy city of Ca, out of Bagdad, he warned Iraq's army is now a powerful force. He said an operation center had been established in E provice for a final war against Al-Qaeda and remnants of fomer Saddam Huisain regime. The prime minister did not indicate how many troops are being sent or provide further details. The announcement came after a warning by the US military that Mozol is the last major city where Al-Qaeda in Iraq maitains a strong presence and it has largely been driven from Baghdad and other major population centers. Three weeks ago US and Iraqi forces launched a new assault against Al-Qaeda operatives in other provinces, north of the capital. D B, VOA news, Baghdad.

An American aide worker and her driver had been kidnapped by gummen in southern Afghanistan's Kandahar provices. The women was wearing a burka and was on her way to work. According to the provincial governor, she worked for a non-governmental organization that focuses on agriculure and development. No group has yet claimed responsibility.

Pakistani authorities have raised a state of alertness around its nuclear falicities after the resurgence of military attacks. However, The head of the agency that handles Pakistani nuclear arsenal says there is no conceivable scenario in which Pakistan would fall into in Al-Qaeda or Taliban type extremists.

Another shipment of Russian nuclear fuel has arrived in Iran for that country's first atomic powerplant. Iran's official news agency say P plant in the southern iran has now received 77 tons of uranium fuel rods of the initial supply of 82 tons of fuel they say they will need
