Former Indonesian President Suharto has died after badly heart, lung and kidney problems for more than 20 days in a Jakarta hosptial. Ch B reports from the Indonesia capital.

The 86-year-old former dictator was admitted to the hosptal in critical condition on January 4th. His doctors say he suffered multiple organ failure and slept into a coma Sunday before passing away. Major Sun Danie, the police chief for the district where the hospital is located announced the news.

He says Indonesian second president Haji Muhammad Suharto passed away at about 10 minutes after one p. m. local time. Former President Suharto's 32 year rule saw the economic growth and stability for Indonesia, but widespread human rights abuses and corruption as well. He stepped down in 1998 during the Asian economic crisis and mass protests demanding his resignation. Ch B for VOA news, Jakarta.

Former UN Chief Kofi Annan met today with Kenya's Opposition Party leader Raila Odinga hours after more ethnic violence in the Rift valley left at least 17 people dead. Mr. Annan said after visiting the Rift region Saturday that President Mwai Kibaki's disputed election has resulted in gross and systematic human rights abuses. Scores of people have been killed in the regions since fighting broke out there Thursday. The tribal fighters are attacking each other with bows and arrows and machetes. Some of them have been burnt to death. The feuding erupted after last month's presidential election, putting President Kibaki's Kiyuko tribe against Mr. Odingo's Luo tribe and the Kalenjin clan. The death toll across Kenya is at least 750.

A new study of the African Union's operatons says the organization is plagued by waste, corruption, weak leadership and unhealth culture. African Union leadered asked for the study last June and a high level panel to conduct it. The copy of the panel's report obtained by VOA is scathingly critical of AU top leadership. It described the relationship between AU Commission Chairman Alpha Oumar Konare and other commissioners as disfuctional. The panel found serious flaws in the operation of several AU bodies and said the management of financial resources needs a complete overhaul.

Senate Barack Obama won the South Carolina Democratic Primary by a wide margin over his closest rival Senator Hillary Clinton. Former Senator John Edwards who was born in the state came in third. VOA's R reports on the latest US Presidential Contests.

Obama began his quest for the presidency last year as a candidate who could transcend race, but by winning the Iowa Caucuses in the mid-western state that has a very small black population he convinced many blacks around the country that he was the first African-American with a real chance set winning the presidency. At that point, his supporters among blacks in South Carolina surged. But analysts say it would be critical for him to emphasize his appeal across racial boundaries as he enters important Super Tuesday contest on February 5th in which 22 states will hold primaries and caucuses. Analysts also note that Hillary Clinton remains a formidable candidate in these contest and is likely to fight hard for every vote. Her appeal to women is especially strong. She's the first femal presidential candidate with a real chance of becoming president. R F, VOA News, Columbia, South Carolian.

Israeli Prime Minister Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas have met to discuss the crisis on the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. Ahead of today's meeting, Palestinian officials said Mr. Abbas would ask Israel to allow Palestinian authority forces to deploy to the border, but it is not clear forces loyal to Mr. Abbas would be able to take control of the area now held by rival Hamas fighters. Hamas fighters blew up the security fences along Egypt border Wednesday to allow hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to buy food and other supplies. Israel has sealed its border with Gaza nearly two weeks ago to protest rocket attacks on Israel by Hamas militants.

Pakistni security forces say they have renewed the efforts to recapture a key road tunnel in the country's northwestern frontier province from militants. Fighting in the lawless region around the town of Adam Jale entered its third day today as Pakistani troops backed by helicoper gunships targeted militants soon after controlled the tunnel in the hill sorrounding it.
