Senator Barack Obama won the South Carolina democratic primary by wide margin over his closest rival Senator Hilary Clinton. Former Senator John Edwards who was born in the state came in third. VOA’s Greg Flakus reports from on the latest in the U.S. presidential contest.

Obama began his quest for the presidency last year as a candidate who could transcend race. But by winning the Iowa caucuses in the Mid-western state that has a very small black population he convinced many blacks around the country that he was the first African American with a rare chance set winning the presidency. At that point his supporters in blacks South Carolina surged. But analysts say it would be critical for him to emphasize his appeal across racial boundaries as he enters the important Super Tuesday contest on February 5th in which 22 states will hold primaries and caucuses. Analysts also note that Hilary Clinton remains a formidable candidate in those contests and is likely to fight hard for every vote. Her appeal to women is especially strong. She is the first female presidential candidate with a real chance of becoming president. Greg Flakus, VOA news, Colombia, South Carolina.
