Police battled machete wielding mobs in Kenya’s Rift Valley today as the country’s post election violence fled to more areas. Witnesses say hundreds of people from the rival Luo-Kibaki tribes. Many of them bearing axes, clubs and rocks confronted each other today in the city of *. The group retreated only when police fire shots in the air. Police also fired bullets and tear gas to control mobs in the western city of *. Residents say Luo sets fire that killed at least one person and that police shooting kills two.

A roadside bomb in Southern Somalia killed at least 4 people including two foreign aid workers. Police and the witnesses say the victims were killed today driving in the poor city of *. They say two Somalia and Kenya in front of the citizens were killed.

President Bush is preparing to deliver his final state of Union address. The annul speech before US congress set outlines the president’s policy agenda for the coming year. White House aid says the president will focus on discussing plans to keep the U.S. economy from slipping into a recession. VOA’s White House correspond Paula Wolfsan previews the president’s address.

White House officials say the president will not spend much time looking back instead, they say, he will look to the future in his final state of Union Address. White House spokeswoman * says he will talk about areas where he feels he can work in concert with the democratic majority in congress. Key among them is the * of measures intended to stimulate the U.S. economy and enhance the efforts to counter the terrorist threat. The president will call on congress to act quickly to pass an economic stimulus package along the lines of the agreement the White House recently reached with democratic and republican leaders in the House of Representatives. Mr. Bush is also likely to talk on some * about his hopes for Mid-east peace deal that will lay down the * of the Palestinian State. U.S. stocks have been slightly lower today resisting the steep losses recorded earlier in Asia. Major stock index in New York fail last one percent throughout the opening *. In Asia earlier, markets fall between 4 and 7 percent on fears of the recession of the United States will weaken the demands for Asian export. The major European indexes London, Pairs and Frankford were also down in Monday’s trading.

Egyptian border guard has began a restricting traffic across the border from the Gaza Strip. This comes 5 days after parts of the border security fence were blown up allowing Palestinians to flood into Egypt to buy food and supplies. VOA’s correspond Chilce MecDonna has more details from the * town of Rafa.

After 5 days of virtually unrestricted traffic Egyptian border guards began exerting some control of the vehicles crossing the border but pedestrians continue to pass through freely. The rain kept crowds thinner than on previous days and turned the town into a muddy mess. But there were still thousands of people * navigating around badly flooded streets * to cross the border in both directions. Egyptian security forces brought in more reinforcement and set up scores of check points on every road meeting out of Rafa to prevent Palestinians from Gaza from heading for the nearby town of * shut 35 kilometers away. The Rafa border post is the only way in or out of Gaza that bypasses Israel but it has been almost entirely closed since Hama violently took control of Gaza in June. Chils MecDonna, VOA news, Rafa.

Pakistan interior ministry says gunmen have released all the children briefly held hostage in the high school in northwest frontier province. A ministry spokesman says the gunmen surrounded the local tribal council long with their weapons and released the children. The ministry says up to 250 students have been held. Meanwhile Pakistan’s president Pervez Musharraf and British Prime Minister Golden Brown have opened talks in London as the opponents of Pakistan’s leader demonstrate nearby. The talks attend down in * expected to focus on the struggle against terrorism as well as efforts to guarantee the next month’s parliamentary elections in Pakistan will be free and fair.
