Rebels in Chad says they have purposely pulled out in Gemana, while the government says it has crashed the rebellion and fully controls the capital city. Rebel leaders said today they deliberately withdrew to the outskirts of the city to give civilians a chance to escape. Witnesses say thousands of people have fled the country, crossing the Chari river into Cameroon. The United Nations security council plans to cotinue emergency talks today on the situation in Chad. Meanwhile the French military says it has airlifted more than 500 French nationals and other foreigners out of Chad to Gabon. Among those other foreigners are 103 UN aid workers. Lisha Shiline has more details in this report for VOA from Geneva.

U.N. refugee spokeswoman, Helene Caux tells VOA, the agency had to withdraw its aid workers because it could not leave them in / harm's way. "It is very worring. The fighting in N'Djamena is not over. The situation there is / very confusing. So, it is an absolutely chaotic situation right now in Chad."

Hundreds of rebels intent on overthrowing the government of Idriss Deby entered the capital on Saturday. They reportedly have seized large parts of the city and are surrounding the president's palace. French forces in N'Djamena / have flown out hundreds of French and other foreign citizens, as well as UN staff to the Gabonese's capital Libreville. The UNHCR assists 240,000 refugees from Darfur in 12 sprawling camps in eastern Chad. Although its staff was forced to leave two camps in Guereda, the agency says aid workers are still present in the ten other camps. Lisa Schlein for VOA news, Geneva.

Former U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan's choice to leave mediation efforts in Kenya has withdrawn from the process after the government suggested he was biased in favour of the opposition. Cyril Ramaphosa, a south African business man had arrived in Nairobi on Friday to help Mr. Annan in the negotiations. It is not immediately clear what effect Ramaphosa's withdrawal would have on the talks.

Israeli authorities say a suicide bomber detonated a blast in the southern town of Dimona today killing an Israeli woman and wounding several other people. A Dimona police official said there were two attackers, but one was shot dead before he could detonate his explosives belt. It is unclear who is behind the attack.

Turkey's military says warplanes attacked 70 suspected Kurdish rebel targets in northern Iraq earlier today. Local Iraqi security forces said three villages known to be Kurdish rebel strongholds have been bombed. There have been no reports of casualites from the raids on the remote region along Turkey's southeastern border.

Roads, railways and air traffic are slowly returning to normal in China where the worst snowstorms in 50 years have stranded millions of travellers trying to get home for this week's lunar new year holiday. The severe weather has also affected the shipment of fresh vegetables throughout the country. VOA's Defini Hell has more details in this report from Beijing.

With just a few days left before the biggest holiday in the Chinese calendar, the Lunar New Year, shoppers strolled up and down Beijing's Wangfujing streets Saturday. It was cold but the skies were clear and sunny. An elderly Chinese man who refused to give his name dismissed questions about whether Beijing residents are feeling any negative effects of the snowstorms. There has been no real impact on Beijing, he says, the bad weather has mostly affected transportation. Heavy snow in the usually temperate south, central and eastern part of the country has thrown the train network into chaos, stranding millions of people who are trying to return home for the holiday. The snow and ice has affected electricity lines, cutting off power from millions more. The bad weather also is exacerbating the facts of a coal shortage triggering a series power crisis for the country. Stefiny Hell, VOA news, Beijing.

A suicide attack in the Pakistani city of Rawalpindi has killed at least 6 military personnel and wounded 25 others. Pakistani officials say an attack on a motorcycle rammed / the military minibus near the army's National Logistic Cell today.

And former Khmer Rouge leader Nuon Chea had his first appearance before Cambodia's U.N.-backed genocide tribunal today but the hearing was quickly adjourned because of problems with his defense team. The judgers have postponed the hearing and next trial day has not been set.
