Rebels in Chad say they have purposely pulled out of N'djamena while the government says it has crushed the rebellion and fully controlled the capital city. Rebel leader says today they deliberately withdrew to the outskirt of the city to give civilians a chance to escape. Witnesses say thousands of people have fled the country, crossing the Chad river to Cameroon. The United Nations Security Council plans to continue emergency talks today on the situation in Chad. Meanwhile, the French militay says it has airlifted more than 500 French nationals and other foreigners out of Chad to Gabon. Among those other foreigners were 103 UN aid workers. Lisha Schlein has more details in this report for VOA from Geneva.

UN Refugee spokewoman Helen Coul tells VOA the agency had to withdraw its aid workers because it could not leave them in a harm's way. "It's very worrying, the fighting in N'djamena is not over. The situation there is very confusing so it's a absolutely chaotic situation right now In Chad."

Thundrends of rebels intent on overthrowing the government of Iddris Deby entered the capital on Saturday. They reportedly seized large parts of the city and are surrounding the presidential palace. French forces in N'djamena have flown out hundreds of French and other foreign citizens as well as UN staff to the Gabonese capital Libreville. The UNHCR assists 240000 refugees from Darfur in 12 sprawling camps in eastern Chad. Although its staff was forced to leave two camps in Garida, the agency says aid worker are still present in the 10 other camps. Lisha Schlein for VOA news, Geneva.

Former US Secretary General Kofi Annan's choice to leave the mediation efforts in Kenya has withdrawn from the process after the goverment suggested he was biased in favor of the opposition. S R,a South African business man has arrived in Nairobi Friday to help Mr. Annan in the negotiation. it is not immediately clear what effects R withdrawal would have on the talks.

Israeli authorities say a suicide bomber detonated a blast in southern town of Dimona today, killing an Israeli woman and wounding seveal other people. Dimona police officials said there were two attackers. A woman was shot dead before he could detonate his explosive belt. It's not clear who is behind the attack.

Turkish military says warplanes attacked seven suspected Kurdish rebel targets in northen Iraqi earlier today. Local Iraqi security forces said 3 villages known to be Kurdish rebel strongholds have been bombed. There were no reports of casualities from the raids on the romote region along Turkish southeastern border.

Roads, railways and air traffic were slowly returnig to normal in China where the worst snowstorms in 50 years stranded millions of travelers trying to get homes for this week's lunar new year holiday. The severe weather has also affected the shipment of fresh vegetables throughout the country. VOA's Steven How has more details in this report from Beijing.

With just a few days left before the biggest holiday in the Chinese calendar, the lunar new year, shoppers strolled up and down Beijing's Wangfujing streets Saturday. It was cold but the sky was clear and sunny. An ederly Chinese man who refused to give his name dismissed questions about whether Beijing residents are feeling any negative effects of snowstorms. "It has been no real impact on Beijing", he says. "The bad weather has mostly affected transportation." Heavy snow in the usually temperate south, central and eastern parts of the country has thrown the train network to chaos, stranding millions of people who are trying to return homes for the holiday. The snow and ice has affected electricity lines, cuting off power for millions more. The bad weather also exacerbated effects of coal shortage, triggering a serious power crisis for the country. A suicide attack in the Pakistani city of Rawalpindi has killed at least 6 military personnel, wounding 25 others. Pakistani officials say a atacker on a motorcycle rammed into a military minibus near the army's national logistic cell today.

Former Khmer Rouge leader N C has had his appearance before Cambodia's UN backed genocide tribunal today. But hearing was quickly adjourned because of problems with his defense team. The judges have postponed the hearing and the next trial day has not been set.
