Innanoy senator Brark Abama swept up more delegates Saturday in his bid for the democratic presidential nomination, winning the days to Koxis in one primary. On the republican side former Akensa government Mike Harkbee won two victories. VOA's Greg Plegers reports.
Brark Abama won handle the end of Lueisana, Debrasika and Washington state with a confortable lead in all three contests over New York senator Hillary Cliton. Speaking to reporters in Richment Virginia, Obama celebrated his victories. Today the voters from the west coast to the Gulf coast, to the heart of America, stood up to say, yes we can. These wins should help Abama as he moves to the next set of important contests in Marryland and the district of Columnbia worries heavily favoured and in Virginia which is hardly contested.
On the republican side Saturday, Mike Harkbee choked up victories in both Kensus and Luisana to republican front runner John Macain. US defense secretary Robert Gates has nated a direct appeal to European governments to send more troops to join the war in Afghanistan. Gates spoke today in an international security conference in Unik Germany. He said the threat of islamic extremism is real. and voiced concern that Europeans may not in his words, comprihend the magnitude of the direct threat to European security. Gates said the situation in Afghanistan is threatening turn NATO into a two teard organization. Of those willing to fight extremism and those who are not.
The top US military officer met with Pakistani military commanders in the northwest frontier province today. Adnol Mike Mornen the chairman of the joint chief substaff travelled to the provincial capital Pershower to discuss Pakistani military efforts against Al Quaed and Taliban in the region near Afghanistan. His visit came a day after meetings with Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf and army chief Ashibark Pervez Kayayini in Islamabad. Yanirow said today that the threat of Islamic extremism is growing in Pakistan. 12:50
Burma's military government says it will hold a referendum on the new constitution in May. and plans general elections in 2010. As Run Corben reports from Bankok the news has been greeted with hope. But scatericism by both Burmese and foreign analysts. The announcement by state controlled media who has been received with cautious optimism who review the news as a possible stepforward after more than 4 decades of military rule. But human rights groups are warning it may be attacked by the military government to ease international pressure to reform. After violently surprised pro democracy demonstrations last year. The crackdown on protest marchers led by Bhuddist monks killed at least 31 people and injured many more. The opposition national league for democracy and and L-day led by Nobal larried Unsong Suchi has also reacted cautiously to the announcement about election. The US military says documents captured from leaders of Al Quaed in Iraq showed the group has been weakened and at least 2 parts of the country. The military said today that a letter written by a senior Al Quaed Imier gives a pessimistic account of the group's prospects in the western Iraq's Anbar province. it says the letter was found in November.
Ambars where Sunni tribal leaders turned against Al Quaed in Iraq in 2006 and form the first US allied awakening council. Israeli prime minister Ahood Almert has vowed to to persue anyone involved in terrorist attacks on Israel. The United Nations refugee agency says thousdands of people from Sudan's Darfur region have fled to neighbouring Chad following government attacks on three towns. The office of the UN hign commissioner for refugee says the agency is sending a team to investigate the situation. Sudan's army confirmed the Friday's military operations.
