us defense secretary robert gates has made direct appeal to european goverments to send more troops to join the war in afghanistan. gates spoke today at an international security conference in [uniq] germany. he says the threat of islamic extremism is real and voiced concern that many europeans may not in his words comprehend the magnitute of direct threat to european security. gates said the situation in afghanistan is threatening [turn nato] and to a teared organization of those willing to fight extremism and those who are not.

the top us military officer met with pakistanian military commanders in the northwest frontier province today. edmon mike molen the chairman of joint chief surf staff traveled to the provincial capital pershower to discuss pakistanian military efforts against al qaeda and taliban in the region here afghnistan. his visit came after meetings with pakistanian president and army chief in islamadh. demon said today that the threat of islamic extremism is growing in pakistan.

burma's military goverment says it will hold a referendum on a new constitution in may and plans generally elections in 2010. as brown coben reports from bangkok the news is being greeted with hope but skeptism by both burmea and foreign analyse.

the anoucement by state controled media is being received with cushion skeptimism by burmea who view the news as impossible step forward after more than 4 decades of military rule. but human rights group are warning it may be attacked by the military goverment to ease international pressure to reform after violently supressed pro democracy demonstrations last year. the crack down on protest marches led by budist monks killed at least 31 people and injured more. the opposition national league for democracy, NLD, led by naril ansangsutri has also reacted cautiously to the anouncment about election. a spokesman says it does not make sense to set a date for election before the results of referendum are known.

the us military says documents captured from leaders of al qaeda in iraq show the group has been weakened and at least 2 parts of the country. military says today that a letter written by a senior al qaeda imier gives a pessimistic account of the group's prospects in west iraq unban province, says the letter was found in november. and boras where suni tribal leaders turned against al qaeda in iraq in 2006 and formed first us allied awakening council.

the united nation's refugee agency says thousands of people from sudan's darfur region have fled to neighboring chad following goverment attacks on three towns. the office of the un high commissioner for refugee says the agency is sending a team to investigate the situation. sudan's army confirmed friday's operations.
