Illinois senator Barack Obama swept up more delegates Saturday in his beat for the democratic presidential nomination, winning the day’s two caucuses and one primary. On the republican side, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee won two victories. VOA's R P reports.

Barack Obama won handling in Louisiana, Nebraska and Washington State with a comfortable lead in all three contests over New York senator Hillary Clinton. Speaking to reporters In Richman, Virginia, Obama celebrated his victories.
Today the voters from the west coast to the gulf coast to the heart of America, stood up to say, yes we can.
These wins sure help Obama as he moves to next set of important contests in Maryland and the Distict of Columbia where he is heavily favored and in Virginia which is hardly contested. On the republican sides Saturday, Mike Huckabee shot up victories in both Kansas and Louisiana to republican front-runner John McCain. He is widely viewed as the probable republican nominee, he faces rips within his party over positions he’s taken on such issues as tax cuts and immigration reform. R P, VOA news, Houston.

US defense secretary Robert Gates has made a direct appeal to European goverments to send more troops to join the war in Afghanistan. Gates spoke today at a International Security Conference in Munich, Germany. He said the threat of Islamic extremists is real and voiced concerns that many Europeans may not , in his words, comprehend the magnitude of direct threat to European security. Gates said the situation in Afghanistan is threatening turn NATO into a two-tiered organization, of those willing to fight extremism and those who are not.

The top US military officer met with Pakistani military commanders in northwest frontier province today. A M, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff travelled to the provincial capital Peshawar to discuss Pakistani military efforts against Al-Qaeda and Taliban in the region near Afganistan. His visit came a day after meeting with Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf and army chief Ashfaq Parvez Kayani in Islamabad. A said today that the threat of Islami extremism is growing in Pakistan.

Burma's military goverment says it will hold a referendum on a new constitution in May and plans general elections in 2010. As R C reports from Bankok the news is greeted with hope but skepticism by both Burmese and foreign analysts.

The announcement by state-controlled media has been received with cautious optimism by Burmese who viewed the news as a possible step forward after more than four decades of military rule. But human rights groups are warning it may be attacked by the military government to ease the international pressure to reform after it violently suppressed pro-democracy demonstrations last year. The crackdown on protest marches led by Buddhist monks killed at least 31 people and injuried many more. The opposition national league for democracy, NLD, led by Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi has also reacted cautiously to the announcement about elections. A spokeman says it does not make sense to set a day for election before the results of referendum are known. R C for VOA news, Bankok.

The US military says documents captured from the leaders of Al-Qaeda in Iraq show the group has been weakened in at least two parts of the country. The military said today that a letter written by a senior Al-Qaeda emir gives a pessimistic account of the group prospect in western Iraq's A province since the letter was found in November. A where a Sunni tribal leaders turned against Al-Qaeda in Iraq in 2006 has formed the first US-Allied Awakening Council.

Israeli Prime Minister Olmert has vowed to pursue any one involved in terrorist attacks on Israel. Mr. Olmert comments came at a cabinet meeting today, the day after a Palestinian rocket seriously wounded an Israeli boy. Mr. Olmert says Israel will target all terrorist elements, including those who act as dispatchers and handlers, He says Israel must act in an orderly and methodical manner.

The United Nations Refugee Agency says thousands of people from Sudan's Darfur region have fled to neighboring Chad following government attacks on three towns. The office of UN High Commissioner for Refugee says the agency is sending a team to investigate the situation. Sudan's army confirmed Friday's military operation.
