US Defense officials say a missile lauched from a navy ship has hit a derelict US spy satellite more than 200 kilometers above the earth. The Pentagon said the missile successfully hit the target at about 3:30 Universal Time Thursday.It says officials should have confirmation within a day that the fuel tank which was the main cause for concern was fragmented.US officials said that if the satellite had crashed to earth,the 450 kilograms of toxic fuel called hydrogene could have posed to health hazard.
China,meanwhile,which faced international criticism for destroying one of its satellites in space last year says it is monitoring the US destruction of the satellite.VOA's Stephene Hole has report from Beijing.The Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao gave a measured response when asked about Thursday's apparently successful US operation.He says China is closely monitoring the fact the US move may have unsafety in outer space and possible harm it could cause to other countries.The newspaper of Chinese ruling Communist party the People's Daily took harsher view Thursday at the US action,accusing Washington of / in criticising other countries' space ambitions.When China tested an anti-satellite missile and destroyed one of its own satellites in deep space a year ago,the Bush administration and other governments condemned the act as dangerous.There were scene differences in the two situations.Debris from the destroyed Chinese satellite remains in space while the US and other governments have said it could potentially damage operating satellites.The US satellite that was destroyed Thursday was already out of control and falling toward earth.The US defence department said the satellite had tank full of toxic fuel called hydrogene which could have harmed humans if it had fallen to earth and attacked.Stephene Hole,VOA news,Beijing.
The leaders of Pakistan's two main opposition parties are meeting in the capital of Islamabad to discuss creating a coalition government.Today's meeting between Asif Ali Zadawi,the leader of Pakistan People's party and former prime minister Nawaz Sharrif,head of Pakistan Muslim league end party took place as lawyers demanded reinstatement of judges deposed during the imposition of emergency rule last year.Hundreds of protestors fought with police throughout Pakistan's major cities today including Islamabad where deposed chief justice Iftica Muhamad Chaundry called for immediate restoration of judiciary.Mr.Sharrif briefly joined the crowd of protestors outside Chaundry's home where he called President Pervez Mussarraf's rule illegal.
Independent investigators have cleared South Korea's president elect of fraud and stock manipulation allegations.VOA's Croation has report from Seoul.Korean president elect Lee Ill Bak's political rivals have insisted for months he made millions of dollars using fraud / financial practices.On Friday independent investigators closed the book on those allegations once in for all./ ,spokesman for the special council,told a nationally televised news conference Lee was not involved in stock price manipulation.Lee's political rivals tried hard to draw attention to the accusitions during december's presidential election campaign.They pointed to Lee's alleged involvement with US finacial services company called BBK.Lee who was scheduled to be swarmed in as president monday has denied the charges,saying he had no connection to BBK./ says investigators agree.He says the independent council has concluded the president elect has no involvement in BBK.Croation,VOA news,Seoul.
President Bush says the United States wants to help Liberians recover from what he called terrible period.Mr.Bush made the comments after he and first lady Laura Bush landed today in the Liberian capital of /,the last stop on his five nation tour of Africa.I do want to thank the people in Liberia for the warm welcome we have recieved.I love to have all the smiles and enthusiasm along the crowd.Mr.Bush's meeting with Leberian president / before returning Washington late in the day.The US president is expected to announce a program to provide Leberian school children with 1 million textbooks by the start of next school year.
Taking a brief look at stock activities on Wall Street at this hour.US stock index are higher.East Asia Pacific stock markets were mostly higher at the close trade today.
