Turkey says it has sent troops across the border into northern Iraq to attack Kurdish rebels. The Turkish military said today the operation started Thursday night following air and artillery strike against suspected rebel positions inside Iraq. Turkish officials have not reported any casualties but a spokesman for the rebel Kurdistan Workers Party says 2 Turkish soldiers were killed and 8 wounded. Turkish television reports say 10,000 troops were involved.

 

Iraqi radical cleric Muctada Asada has extended for another 6 month of ceasefire that has played a large part in reducing violence in the country. Clerics loyal to Alsadar announced the extended truce, and US and Iraqi forces during Friday prayers. US officials say the ceasefire has been an important element in reducing violence in Iraq by 60% since June.

 

Iran says it expects a new UN report to be positive and show the world that Iran is pursuing a nuclear program for peaceful purposes. UN Nuclear Agency Chief Muhamad Abaraday is due to release the report about Iran's past nuclear activities later today. Iran says it is developing nuclear atomic , it has been building two nuclear, is expected to open later this year. The US and its allies accused Iran of trying to master technology to build nuclear weapons. On Thursday, France and Britain formed the introduced resolution to the UN Security Council seeking a third round of economic and trade sanctions against Iran.

 

Democratic Party presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama phased off in an debate Thursday in the US state of Texas. VOA's Grade Flakes has a report from Huston.

 

The debate on the campus of the University of Texas in Austin was marked by few contentious moments. one came when Senator Obama was asked about charges that he had stolen phrases from a speech by Massachusetts governor Depoul Patree, the notion that I have plagiarized from somebody who is one of the national coachers who gave me the line and suggest that I use it, I tanker a silit. Venezuelan authorities say they have found the wreckage of a passenger plane that had 46 people on board when it crashed in the mountains of western Venezuela. Authorities say searchers and rescuers are searching by helicopter spotted at the wreckage today in the mountainous area near the city of Marida. They say they do not believe there are any survivors. The twin engine plane had taken off Thursday from Mirida /on a flight to the capital Caracus. It was operated by Santa Barbara, a small Venezuelan airline that covers domestic routes.

 

United States has formally protested to Serbia over what the US said was inadequate security at the US embassy in Belgrade. The protest came after the facility was attacked and partly burned by demonstrators protesting US support for Kosovo's declaration of independence.  A top African Union official pushed today for a quick resolution of Kenya's post election crisis. The chairman of the African Union commission John Pin held talks in the capital Nairobi today with president Muwai Kibaki and leaders of the opposition orange democratic movement. Pin later told reporters he is confident talks between the two sides are moving in the right direction. But said the next few days will be crucial for finalizing an agreement.

 

Sierra Leone’s war crimes court has rejected an appeal from three former rebel leaders to reduce their decades-long prison sentences for atrocities committed during the country's civil war. The judge Sierra Leone said the court could find no reason to interfere with the lengthy sentences against Alex Tamba Brima, Santigie Borbor Kanu and Brima Bazzy Kamara.
