Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton won a key primary contest in Ohio Tuesday against rival Barack Obama,ensuring the battle for the Democratic party's presidential nomination will continue.Clinton and Obama were also locked in a tight primary race in Texas.And in the Republican race,Senator John McCain won all four primary contests on Tuesday and clinched his party's nomination.VOA national correspondent Jim Malone reports on the Democratic race from Washington."Hillary Clinton was banking on a history in Ohio to keep her presidential hopes alive."For everyone here in Ohio and across America who's ever been counted out but refused to be knocked out,and for everyone who has stumbled but stood right back up,and for everyone who works hard and never gives up,this one is for you."Obama still holds a lead in delegates after Tuesday's vote.Obama told supporters in Texas he still expects to be the Democratic nominee."We have nearly the same delegate lead as we did this morning and we are on our way to winning this nomination."Voters exit survey conducted by news organizations showed that Clinton solidified her support among women and working class voters.Obama did well with African-American voters and college-educated Democrats and independents.Jim Malone,VOA news,Washington."
And now for more details on the Republican race.Republican Senator John McCain has a counter remarkable comeback to secure his party's nomination.McCain swept all four states on Tuesday,clinching the nomination in a startling reversal several months after his campaign nearly collapsed.Fresh from those victories,McCain has to visit the White House today for endorsement from President Bush. McCain's rival Mike Huckabee dropped out of the race on Tuesday and endorsed McCain.During a speech in Texas,the former Arkansas Governor called for unity within the Republican party.
Now more on international news.US Secretary of State Condaleezza Rice says Israelis and Palestinians intend to resume peace talks that were suspended after Israeli offensive in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.Rice made the remarks at a joint press conference today in Jerusalem with Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni.She said both sides are in contact with each other on how to resume the talks but gave no time plan.Rice also urged Hamas to cease rocket attacks on Israel.
Officials in northern Iraqi say Turkish military aircraft have dropped bombs in the region.It's come two weeks after Ankara conducted a major offensive against Kurdish PKK rebels in the area.The officials today say the bombs landed in the Kurdish region across the border from Turkey.The Turkish military has not confirmed the report and few details of that incident were available.
China's top priorities for the coming year will be curbing inflation and improving living standards for ordinary people.In his speech to the opening session of the Chinese legislature Wednesday,Premier Wen Jiabao said the government will also pay attention to environmental protection and to streamlining the bloated bureaucracy.VOA's Stephanie Ho reports."Premier Wen Jiabao's first order of business was the Chinese economy.Prices for food,land and other items have gone up significantly with rising consumer demand and shortages of staples such as pork and grain. Premier Wen says the government wants to improve lives for ordinary people in other ways,too.This includes reforms in the health care,education and pension systems.Another major task is restructuring the sprawling government into fewer ministries that will be larger and more efficient.Environmental protection has taken on an added urgency as Beijing plans to host the Olympics in August.Premier Wen recieved the loudest applause when he stressed China's continuing opposition to independence for Taiwan,a separately-governed island Beijing considers part of Chinese territory.The National People's Congress session runs until March 14th.Deputies will approve the budget and a new slate of leaders. President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao will remain in their positions for second five-year terms.Stephanie Ho,VOA news,Beijing ."
A top Spanish official sustained his helping to mediate the conflict between its former colonies Ecuador and Colombia after Saturday's attacks by Colombian forces on the revolutionary armed forces of Colombian rebels inside Ecuador.Speaking to reporters today,Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Anguel Moratinos said he spoke with Ecuadorian and Colombian counterpart.He said they agreed to negotiations.
