A coalition of British aid and human rights groups say the humanitarian situation at Gaza strip is the worst since Israel first occupied the territory more than forty years ago. In a report today the aid British based groups called for an end to the Israeli blockade on Gaza, saying the measures taken are illegal under International Humanitarian Law. The aid groups say the blockade has dismantled the economy and impoverished the population.

 

Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki is urging lawmakers to approve a power-sharing deal intended to end the country’s deadly post-election crisis. Addressing legislators before the opening of parliament today, Mr.(Kibaki) called on them to support a bill that will enshrine the power sharing deal into law.

 

A Sri Lanka Tamil lawmaker and his driver were killed today in a roadside bomb attack in northern Sri Lanka. K S was a member of the Tamil national alliance,as a party outlet with the rebel Tamil Tigers. Meanwhile an international panel monitoring human rights in Sri Lanka has announced its resigning, saying the government failed to support the process. The international independent group of eminent person said today that Sri Lanka government failed to meet the basic minimum standard pertaining to investigations and inquires. Meanwhile, Human Rights Watch said in a new report that the Sri Lanka government is responsible for wide spread abductions and disappearances that are national crisis. A researched the Human rights Watch Report and disputes that position. ‘In many cases we have proved that before people disappear, before they went missing, they were last seen in custody of army or navy officers or they were arrested by the police. And since then all traces of them have been lost.’ The government says many of the people listed as missing went away without informing their family and as mentioned A to research that human right report disputes the government’s claims.

 

Venezuela president Hugo Chávez is threatening to end its country’s trade ties with Columbia in response to the last week’s Columbian military raid on rebel outpost in Ecuador. Mr. Hugo Chávez made his threads in G during a joint conference with the Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa. Mr. Chávez sends thousands of Venezuela troops to Columbia’s border but said he is not seeking an armed conflict. However US Defense Secretary Robert Gates says that he does not expect fighting to break out between Columbia and Venezuela. And if it does, he believes the Columbian military can successfully defend its country. VOA’s A P reports.

 

Secretary Gates was asked about the increase tension on the Columbia and Venezuela border during a news conference on Wednesday.

 

'Relatively little likelihood of a military conflict between them and my further impression is that the Columbians can take care of themselves.'

 

Venezuela President Hugo Chávez announced Sunday he was sending thousands of troops to the border area, but early Wednesday a senior US defense official said there is not as much to the Venezuela military build up as it has been reported. Secretary Gates also expressed his support for the Columbian government and its efforts to deal with the FARC rebels whom he called terrorists. President Chávez of Venezuela has good relations with FARC leaders and previously tried to mediate between them and the Columbian government. A Columbian military strike on an alleged FARC base in Ecuador on Saturday sparked the current tension. Ecuador's government has protested the attack as a violation of its sovereignty but has not taken any military action. A P VOA news at the Pentagon.

 

A small explosive device damaged the military recruiting station at the New York City’s Time Square early today. Police say someone threw the device at the recruiting station several hours before dawn. Police and fire crews quarantined out Time Square and averted subway trains for several hours. The normal traffic resumed by the start of the morning’s rush hour and no injuries are reported. This hotel guest said that he heard the explosion.

 

 ‘Big bang, I thought it was thunder and all looks out of the window and didn’t see any wrong. And then I see people running and there was a big plume of smoke it was very loud, extremely loud. I should not tell when I was on the 24th floor.’ Police are investigating a report that someone riding a bicycle may have thrown the bomb at the recruiting station.
