Building a better light bulb. Joining us now from Museum of Science Boston is nanotechnology expert Karine Thate, good to have you with us, Karine.

Nice to be here, thank you.

So Watertown, Massachusetts Company that was started by some MIT scientist has come up with a new light bulb. So why the quest for new light bulb?

Well that's a great question, Lesley. Many of you may be surprised to learn that 20% of the energy used in this country goes to lighting. So there are huge energy savings to be hunt just by making better light bulbs. And there is anybody who's ever burned their hands changing a light bulb knows incandescent bulbs actually waste a lot of their energy through heat. So because of that, consumers have been switching in recent years to Compact Fluorescent lights which are much more energy efficient. They use 70% less energy. They stay cool and they last very long time. But they contain mercury which is polluted and people are turned off by their very harsh white light they create.

So what are these new bulbs made of?

They are made of LED, light emitting diode which produces very nice bright light using 80% to 90% less energy that traditional incandescent bulbs. They don't contain any mercury and they can last 15 years.

Oh, all right, and how do they look?

Well that's the problem. They do create this quite harsh white light as well. And this company Qdivision came up the idea of using nanotechnology to improve the color quality of LED bulbs. They are using something called quantum dots.

All right, what exactly the quantum dots do?

Well, quantum dots don't really act like a filter. A filter actually absorbs light energy, so you lose light making light bulb less efficient. Quantum dots do something different. And I have a vial of quantum dots right here. They are tiny nanocrystal of semiconductors that glow or give up certain light when they are excited. Watch this. When we excite the quantum dots with UV light, you can see that they give up a certain color of light, and only difference between these three vials is the size of the quantum dot they contain. The small crystals produce blue light and large crystals produce white light. So Qdivision had the idea of using the quantum dots that produce this warm light to create uptick piece over top the light bulb. And you can see the effect right here. This is my hand under the harsh white light LED and this is my hand under the warm light created by the new nanotech bulb.

You can really see the difference on that. (You can.) It is a warmer light. When are these things gonna be available for people to buy?

These bulbs are coming up market next month or two through Nex lighting. So consumer should keep an eye up for a warm. But they are expensive glow as typically new technology is. They are gonna start out pretty pricy but you make up for upfront cost with longevity and lower energy costs over time. And consumers will see quantum dots have a lot of other uses in next few years, not just in lighting but also in improving the color quality of televisions and computers displays as well.

Do you think this is gonna be the new light bulb for the future that everybody is gonna have?

Indeed, they make up a small percentage of market now, but everyone in industry is really expecting to glow up financially in next few years as they become cheaper.
