This is the VOA Special English EducationReport.
Today we answer a question from a listenaryin Columbia. John Edison wants to know the costs of undergraduate and graduate studyin the United States.

Well, the first thing to know is that pricesare different from school to school. Private colleges and universitiesgenerally cost more than public ones. Another thing to keep in mind is that notall students pay a school’s published price. Financial aid and scholarships mayreduce the costs.

Here are a few numbers for this school yearfrom the College Board Organization. The average published price forundergraduate study at a four year public college was about 7 000 dollars. Thatwas for students from instate. The students from other states as well asinternational students paid average more than 18 000 dollars. This is the badnews. International students often have to pay the highest price.

These averages were only for tuition andfees. The food, housing, books and supplies can add 10 to 20 000 dollars ayear. The College Board says the average tuition of a private college was about26 000 dollars.

Many students save money by starting theireducation at a 2 year public college, also known as a community college. The averagetuition this year was about 2 500 dollars. A few American colleges provide a freeeducation including the military and Marching Marian Academies. They acceptsome foreign students. Marian College is a small Christian school in MarianKantakie that its all first year costs for its foreign students. But they areexpected to pay 1 000 dollars a year after that. Summer jobs are provided to helpmeet this cost.

Cost for graduate study in the UnitedStates also differs from school to school, even from to program. Here two publicuniversities charged more for out of state tuition. For example, at the universityof Kantakie out of state graduate tuition averaged about 18 000 dollars thisyear. Instate was about 9 000.

American students often have taken out loansto help pay for their education. President Obama recently signed into a law, abills that changes the loan system. We will have more on that next week. Andinternational students can learn much more about the study in the United Stateson our website bookfortheforeignstudentsseriesatovaspecialenglish.com.
