That’s right, what you are hearing at the moment is the tsunami warning. It’s the second time that has sounded tonight. People live across the islands in Hawaii have been told that the wave could hit in about four hours, just about four hours at seven minutes pass three in the morning. It’s now a quarter pass eleven. I am just going to be quiet, there’s a police car with a loud-hailer.
The police are saying “All visitors of the Waikiki area return to your hotels. Return immediately to your hotel for instructions. This is not a drill. Listen to your radio and TV for instructions.” So that’s what the police are telling people on loud-hailers on the streets. And you are looking at a picture of the road outside my hotel, normally a quiet road that runs along a quiet canal in the back of Waikiki. But at twenty pass eleven, here at night, this is now turning into obviously an evacuation route for many people who’re concerned. We understand that /on Oahu which is the island that Honolulu sits. There are 30,000 people in unsafe areas who have been told to move half a mile inland that leaves most of the million-also residents here in safe areas. But what they are talking about here in Waikiki * calling it as a vertical evacuation. There’re a lot of skyscrapers here and a lot of hotels that sit along the Pacific coast, very beautiful part of the world. They are asking people who are below the third floor to move above the third floor and to listen to their radio and TV for instructions.
We’ve just been down to shops ourselves to get some water and some supplies and come back into the hotel. There are a lot of people out there, a lot of people talking about it, but also a lot of realism here. People in Hawaii are used to events like this, they are taught from an early age how to cope with them. Their instructions in the front of telephone directories here is /to what to do when the tsunami siren sounds. I think really most people who are feeling a little * at the moment, probably tourists, there are many hundreds of thousands of tourists who visit this part of the world every year, a lot of them, of course, from Japan. There’re a lot of Japanese /people here, a very strong Japanese influence in the cuisine as well. Many of those, of course, jamming phone lines trying to find out news from home.
