'Increasing speed.'

It was the situation every ferry captain dreads. In the cold blackness of the North Sea, a passenger has fallen overboard. Remarkably the crew of the Princess Seaways managed to turn the vessel around and use their life boat to pull the 23-year-old from the waves, still alive.

'As soon as the captain was informed about the incident, he turned the ship around in the right way so that it ended up in the opposite direction of the sailing route and they were able to find the woman very quickly. And I believe that from the moment she fell overboard and until the moment she was on board again, it lasted 34 minutes.'

These pictures were taken from a RAF Sea King helicopter sent to airlift the woman to hospital.

'Turning right only. Mike(?) tip to toe clear. Steady.'

The rescue happened around 20 miles off the Yorkshire coast as the ferry corssed from Newcastle to the Netherlands.

'Steady. Tips are clear. steady. Approaching the deck. Steady. Nice. On the deck. Deck * working.'

How the woman fell in is not known, but she stayed afloat using a life boy thrown by a fellow passenger.

'Steady, ready for lift. Steady.Tip-toe clear. Winching-in journey from the deck. Winching in. All right clear. Winching in. Tip to toe clear. * they would have come. Winching in.'

The woman from Hertfordshire has now been discharged from hospital, following a journey that was rather less tha plain sailing.

'Ferry. Survival secure.'
