“Are you happy to go ahead?” ”Do you have any questions?” Without a hint of nerves, the first person to have experimental Ebola vaccine takes the plunge, ***, is one of sixty healthy volunteers in Britain given the jab as part of the clinical trial, and she’s paid just 380 pounds, not for the risk but for any loss of earnings. The vaccine clearly tested on monkeys, but scientists need to be sure it’s safe and effective before using it on the front line of the ebola epidemic.
“My 15-year-old son, er…, he thought it was ebola having, and he ask if I was going to die, where***, how much I have to get. My 12-year-old daughter was concerned what you are doing. But it’s the first step, and I am a part of the first step. And I get some vaccine. They know they got the right vaccine and I start giving it, I can make a difference to people’s lives.”
The vaccine is made from a harmless virus common in chimpanzees, been modified to carry a small piece of ebola DNA. Once in patients virus would make a single ebola protein, it will not cause the disease, but it should be enough to prime the immune system to attack the ebola virus if it is encountered in the future.
The good thing about the vaccine is it probably doesn’t need to work for 5 years or even 5 months. If it has higher advocacy for 2 or 3 months that would be valuable. Technically, that’s easier to do thanto make the vaccine work for a decade.
Volunteers will be given varying amounts of vaccine to find dose-triggered good immune response without causing serious side effects. Normally we take 18 months or more for a vaccine to go through clinical trials. But such a desperate need to protect health workers who are putting the life on the line by treating an ebola patients. This one is being a fast trial even while the clinical trials are under way. GlaxoSmithKline is producing ten thousand doses, ready to be sent out to West Africa as soon as they get the green light. But when be anyone near the vaccine for local people, the ebola epidemic is out of control in Sirre Leone and Liberia .And the doctor who discovered the virus told Sky News thousands of people are still likely to die. One of lessons of this epidemic is that we need to make sure that accelerate the way that we test and evaluate drugs, vaccines also, if we would do that in the beginning of the epidemic, we would probably already have an answer. Quarantining the patients and rapid tracing of their contacts currently the only way to beat the virus. The world health Organizations have welcomed 3000 US military personnel being sent to the region to build the field hospitals with 1700 bets. It’s not enough, but it’s a start.
