[Homework]2015-07-30 How to Use a Word
Today's word is grandiloquence, spelled g-r-a-n-d-i-l-o-q-u-e-n-c-e.

Grandiloquence is a noun that means a lofty, extravagantly colorful, pompous, or bombastic style, manner,or quality especially in language. Here is the word used in a sentence from the Harrisonburg Virginia Daily News-record.

"It seems that the only thing that flows more freely than money in Washington is the grandiloquence of the partisans in each party."

The word grandiloquence, which first appeared in English in the late 1500s, is one of several Engliah words pertaining to speech that derive from the Latin word loqui, meaning "to speak." Other offspring of loqui include eloquent meaning "marked by fluent exoression," loquacious which means "full of excessive talk," and soliloquy which means "a long dramatic monologue." Grandiloquence comes, probably via French, from the Latin adjective grandiloquus, which comines loqui and the adjective grandis meaning "grand or  great." A word that is very similar in meaning to grandiloquence is magniloquence--and the similarity is not suprising.Magniloquence combines loqui with magnus, another Latin word meaning "great."
