[Homework]2015-08-03 How to Use a Word
Today's word is doppelganger, spelled d-o-p-p-e-l-g-a-n-g-e-r. There's a umlaut or double dot over the "a" in doppelganger.

Doppelganger is a noun that means a ghostly counterpart of a living person. It can also mean a person who closely resembles another living person or the opposite side of the personality, an alter ego. Doppelganger also means a person who has the same name as another. Here is the word used in a sentence:

Throughout the movie, the main character is frequently mistaken for someone else, and the plot thicken when this doppelganger turns out to be a wanted criminal.

According to age-old German folklore, all living creatures have a spirit double who is invisible but identical to the living individual. The second selves are perceived as being distinct from ghosts which appear only after death, and sometimes they are described as the spiritual opposite or negative of their human counterpart. In 1796, German writer Johann Paul Richter who wrote under the pseudonym Jean Paul, coined the word doppelganger in doppel- meaning "double" and -ganger meaning "goer" to refer to such specters.
