Doctor Tedro said the number of deaths worldwide had more than doubled in the past week.

Many of the deaths have been in the United States where more than 4,000 people have lost their lives, almost half of them in New York State. The US now has more than 200,000 confirmed cases.

Britain has recorded its worst one-day figure for coronavirus related death, 563, a rise of nearly one third. The government is facing increasing pressure over its handling of the outbreak amid criticism over shortages of protective equipment for frontline health workers.

One of the hardest hit countries, Italy has meanwhile registered a relatively low number of new  coronavirus cases for the third day in a row.

In a landmark development in the Afghan conflict, officials have confirmed that government and Taliban representatives have had face to face talks. They met on Tuesday to discuss a prisoner swap.

20 people in the Republic of Congo have been killed by a lightning strike from high voltage power lines in the capital Brazzaville.  The local mayor said people were electrocuted by falling cables.
