Globally, more than 264,000 people have lost their lives during the covid-19 pandemic. All the number of confirmed cases approaches 3.8 million. The United Nations is boosting its appeal for billions of dollars in coronavirus aid,saying the money is necessary to protect millions of lives and help stop the spread of the infection in fragile countries.

The UN's Humanitarian Office said Thursday the world poorest counties are not expected to experience the peak of the covid-19 until sometime in next 3 to 6 month, but that already those areas are seeing lost jobs and income, as well as tighter foods supplies and children going without vaccines. An earlier appeal asked for $2 billion in funding, and the agency said Thursday it need a total of $6.7 billion.

A number of countries are starting to lift lockdown restrictions putting in place to stop the spread of the virus. But health experts are warning of the potential for resurgence of infections if restrictions are lifted too quickly.

Governments in Europe and individual US states are among those currently starting to allow certain businesses to reopen. And people start going to restaurants and shops, as long as they're following social distancing guidelines.

Meantime, a military member and a personal valet working in close proximity to US president Donald Trump tested positive for the new coronavirus. But the White Hose says Mr. Trump and vice-president Mike Pence has since tested negative and remain in good health.

Japan has approved the antiviral drug remdesivir for a coronavirus treatment in a fast-track view.

In the United States, the death toll is over 73,000, with more than 1.2 million infections. The crisis, since then, in the US that has affected the pace of unemployment compensation. They slow marginally in the US last week, but another 3.2 million still filed for the benefits as the coronavirus pandemic continues to wreak havoc on the world's largest economy. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has rebuffed a plea from Germany to reconsider halting funding for the WHO over its handling of the coronavirus outbreak. A leading German newspaper reported Thursday that Pompeo responded to a letter from his German counterpart HM by insisting that the US was deeply committed to working with the international community to fight the coronavirus pandemic, despite the funding freeze. Pompeo noted that the US has been the largest single contributor to the WHO over the years despite what he described as a string of mismanaged pandemic responses by the Geneva-based agency, which he accused of public kowtowing to the Chinese Communist Party regime. Pompeo added that the US has a particular interest in the WHO's performance, transparency and accountability, stating we need functional reliable institutions.

Germany's Foreign Ministry confirmed an exchange of letters between M and Pompeo, but declined to elaborate. The US embassy in Berlin said it will not comment on diplomatic communications.

A chemical gas leaked from an industrial plant in southern Italy (India) early Thursday, leaving people struggling to breathe and collapsing in the streets as they tried to flee. At least 11 people were killed and nearly 1,000 suffered breathing difficulties and other reactions. The synthetic chemical leaked from the LG polymers plant in a city on Idian's bay of Bengal coast while workers were preparing to restart the plant after the coronavirus lockdown was eased.
