Live from NPR news I’m Jack Speer.

Juries in the murder trial of Derek Chauvin have begun deliberations as NPR’s Leila Fadel reports in closing arguments, juries heard 2 different narratives about what happened to George Floyd last summer when he was pinned to the ground by Chauvin’s knee.

Prosecutors told jurors the now ex police officer committed felony assault that ended Floyd’s life while Floyd was defenseless cuffed on the ground and under Chauvin’s knee.

He did not follow the department’s use of force rules, he did not perform CPR, he knew better, he just didn't do better.

He told jurors to believe what they saw, defense attorney Eric Nelson told same jurors that his client was acting like any reasonable officer would based on his training. And that it isn’t reasonable to discount other factors such as drugs and underlying problems in the cause of Floyd’s death. Leila Fadel NPR news, Minneapolis.

Retail pharmacies will soon have rapid covid-19 tests for sale on their shelves. As NPR’s Selena Simmons-Duffin explains several test options costs about 30 dollars a pack.

The food and drug administration cleared the way a few weeks ago for several completely at-home covid-19 tests to be sold over the counter, no prescription required. Now those tests are shipping out to retailers and should be on store shelves soon. The Abbott BinaxNOW test will be sold for about 25 dollars for a pack of 2 tests at CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart, CVS is also selling a 40 dollar test by Ellume which requires a smart phone for results and a test made by Labcorp which costs 120 dollars, that's a more sensitive test that requires mailing the swab to a lab and results come back in a day or two. Selena Simmons-Duffin NPR news.

Colorado’s democratic Governor Jared Polis signed bills into law today, aimed to reducing gun violence, from Colorado public radio Bente Birkeland has more.

One law will require people to properly store firearms, the other will require people to report lost and stolen firearms. Democratic representatives Leslie Herod noted that the bill was named in memory of Isabella Thallas, a young from Denver who was murdered with a stolen rifle.

So that hopefully, it just doesn't happen again. And if this bill or the next bill can save just one person’s life then we all should be proud that we have all done our job.

The democratic controlled legislature plans to consider other gun bills in a wake of last month’s mass shooting in Bolder. Such as strengthening background checks. Republicans argue these measures infringe on constitutional rights and claimed they won’t save lives. For NPR news, I’m Bente Birkeland in Denver.

Federal investigators are sending teams to investigate the crash of a Tesla near Houston where 2 men were killed, both the national high way safety administration and the NTSB said it appears no one was actually sitting in the driver seat.

On Wall Street today the Dow closed lower.

President Biden is likely to face a major challenge this week as he looks to convene a virtual climate summit, it’s anticipated he will present among other things a non-binding but still symbolically important goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions, blamed for causing climate change in the US and globally. Biden’s emission target is likely to be viewed as a proxy for how aggressively the administration will pursue the goal of addressing climate change.

The coast guard says it is suspending its search at sunset today for the 8 still missing, after a service boat capsized in the Gulf a week ago. 5 more have been confirmed dead, from member station WWNO reports it may be the largest rain casualty in recent history.

After a week long search battling stormy conditions, coast guard officials say there’s little likelihood the any of the 8 missing will be found alive. Coast Guard captain Will Watson says they are officially suspending the search.

This does not mean that the case is closed but with that said, our focus now will begin to shift. And we will begin to give our full support to the national transportation safety board that will begin to look into that hows and whys of what happened here.

The federal investigation could take a year or more. For NPR news I’m
