Live from NPR news I’m Jack Speer.

The US Justice Department is opening an investigation into policing practices in Minneapolis on the heels of the guilty verdict against the former police officer in the death of George Floyd. Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey telling NPR’s All Things Consider today he views this as an opportunity to promote change.

We very much welcome the investigation, I was on the phone with the DOJ earlier today, I believe strongly it is an opportunity to continue working towards that deep change in accountability that we know that we need in the Minneapolis department, so to the extent the DOJ can help with that we very much welcome.

Frey however says he does not support defunding the city’s police department. The announcement of the investigation came from US attorney general Merrick Garland on the heels of the jury’s unanimous verdict finding ex officer Derek Chauvin guilty of 2 counts of murder, 1 count of manslaughter in connection with Floyd’s death.
Johnson & Johnson’s covid-19 vaccine is facing still more setbacks, the FDA uncovering multiple problems that the third party factory that’s needed to help boost the country’s vaccine supply, here’s NPR’s Sydney Lupkin.

The FDA released a report today on its latest inspection of an Emergent BioSolutions, the Maryland factory making key ingredients for Johnson & Johnson’s covid-19 vaccine. Emergent ruined a batch earlier this year by cross contaminating it with another client’s product, inspectors found shortcomings that could have led to cross contamination as well as peeling paint and a failure to thoroughly investigate quality problems. Until the issues are resolved, and FDA gives the Emergent its blessing to join Johnson & Johnson’s supply chain, its vaccine supply will be low. Meanwhile the administration of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is on pause, due to concerns about rare blood clots, which officials say are unrelated to the Emergent problems. Stocks finished higher today, regaining much of the ground they lost earlier in the week, more from NPR’s Scott Horsley.

Investors temporarily set aside worries about rising corona virus infections in India and Japan, focusing instead on generally strong earning reports of companies in the US. Both the Dow and the S&P500 Index rose nine tenth of a percent, the tech-heavy NASDAQ jumped 1.2%. NASDAQ gain would have been even larger were it not for Netflix shares which fell more than7% after a disappointing report on new subscribers. Netflix enjoyed big gains when people were stuck at home during the pandemic, but with more streaming competition now and more opportunities to leave the house, the company’s new business fell short of forecast during the first 3 months of the year. Scott Horsley NPR news, Washington.

the Dow rose 316 points the NASDAQ was up 163 points today.

European Union negotiators agree to cut green house gas emissions further and faster than previously planned, and to turn those pledges into law. Teri Schultz reports the deal was clinched just a day ahead of President Biden’s global climate summit.

Negotiators from the EU parliament and the 27 member countries emerged after 14 hours with a deal to reduce the blocks of green house gas emissions by at least 55% from 1990 levels by the end of the decade. This is higher than the EU’s previous goal of a 40% cut, and with final approval from governments and the executive branch would become a legal obligation. European parliament negotiator calls this a historical moment.

It will be an important message to the EU-US summit this week.

The new plan includes what’s called a greenhouse gas budget which will estimate the total of amount of emissions that EU can produce from 2030 to 2050 while staying within its climate goals. For NPR news, I’m Teri Schultz in Brussels.
