Following live stream remarks from dozens of world leaders the US hosted summit on global climate change has begun in earnest with the discussion not surprisingly turning to money. President Biden said today combating climate change will require mobilizing finance on an unprecedented scale. He called on Wall Street to join the fight, special presidential envoy for climate John Kerry said while the first step is a major one.

When President Biden was elected, having made climate one of the most critical issues of his agenda, we had a big step to get up, we had to restore America’s credibility, we had to approve we were serious. And I think today does that in many ways.

Biden said the US will be announcing an international climate finance plan involving not just governments but also the private sector.

The Biden administration is withdrawing a proposal by the Trump administration that would allow government funded homeless shelters to deny access to transgender individuals. More from NPR’s Pam Fessler.

The Trump proposal never went into effect, but the previous administration stopped forcing an existing rule that prohibited shelters from discriminating against individuals based on gender identity. Department of House and Urban Development says the new administration will now enforce those rules which prevent transgender individuals from being turned away from shelter programs that do not confirm to their sex of birth. Transgender individuals are more likely than other homeless people to be unsheltered, increasing their risk of disease and death. Former House secretary Ben Carson infuriated advocates when he raised concerns about big hairy men trying to enter women’s shelters. Pam Fessler NPR news.

The man who set off a bomb in the New York City subway in 2017 has been sentenced to life in prison, NPR’s Ryan Lucas has more.

Akayed Ullah detonated pipe bomb strapped to his chest in the New York City subway station in December 2017, nobody was killed in the attack, but Ullah was badly wounded and found at the scene of the blast. Authority discovered remnants of the bomb, including wires and a 9 volt battery on his person. Ullah is originally from Bangladeshi, claimed he conducted the attack on behalf of the Islamic States. Investors found a hand-written note in his passport that read O America die in your rage. Ullah was convicted by a federal jury in 2018, now judge Richard Sullivan has sentenced him to life in prison, calling all his actions barbaric and heinous. Ryan Lucas NPR news Washington.

Today is Earth Day, the day’s dedicated to environmental protection, and as usual a wide range of companies are taking this opportunity declare themselves eco-friendly, NPR’s Camila Domonoske reports the promotional pushes are not being met with universal acclaim though.

Some people celebrate Earth Day by planting a tree, many companies plant press releases. Hyundai made a video with boy band BTS about eco-friendly life style choices, Etihad Airways of the oil rich United Arab Emirate run a single flight with less single-used plastic on board, an Exxon Mobil board member told CNBC the company is part of the solution, not part of the problem. And meteorologist John Morales published a column denouncing the nationwide phenomenon of corporate green washing. Saying corporate PR distract from the need from systemic change to cut green house gas emission, on that note world leaders are also marking Earth Day by gathering remotely to talk about climate change. The unanimous Supreme Court is cutting back on the authority of federal trade commission to recover ill-gotten gains, justices announcing they’ve overturned nearly 1.3 billion dollar award against professional race car driver who’s convicted of cheating consumers through his payday loan business, ruling taking away what the FTC has called one of its most important and effective enforcement tools, running for the court Justice Stephen Breyer said the provision of federal law relied on does not authorize it  to seek or a federal court to order restitution or disgorgement of profits.

Crude oil futures’ price moved higher today, oil up 8 cents a barrel to settle at 61.43 a barrel in New York.
