A consortion of 4 western states has given a go ahead to resume using the Johnson & Johnson covid-19 vaccine. As NPR’s Eric Westervelt reports the move follows Friday’s decision by the FDA to lift its pause after a federal safety review.

The western states safety review group made up of scientists and health officials from California Washington Oregon and Nevada agreed with the FDA, that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is safe and effective and the risk of developing a rare blood clotting disorder is extremely low. In announcing the decision California governor Gavin Newsom encouraged all Californians to trust the science. Newsom and governors of Oregon and Nevada noted they all have received the J&J vaccine, and encouraged all residents to get vaccinated as soon as possible. The decision paves the way for vaccination clinics in these western states to resume using the one shot J&J vaccine immediately as long as they give patients information about the vaccine’s very rare risk of blood clots. Negotiations of narrowing on a compromise for a sweeping police reform bill in congress although passage remains uncertain. This is in the wake of the murder conviction of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd. Democratic congress woman Karen Bass says police need to be held accountable including ending qualified immunity.

We have 18,000 police departments and no national standards which is why you see some practices legal in some areas, and illegal and in other areas.

Republican senator Rick Scot says there needs to be more transparency to find out what is working and what is not, but “what I’m not gonna do is put our law enforcement community in a position that they got to second guess themselves when they are trying to make sure people stay in safe.” both speaking there to ABC this week.

Thousands of people gathered in Paris and other French cities today to denounce a court ruling that sparked outrage across France. NPR’s Eleanor Beardsley reports France’s highest court ruled the killer in an anti-Semitic murder isn’t criminally responsible for his actions.

The high court ruled the 27-year-old man from Mali was in a delirious state in 2017 when he pushed 65 year-old Sarah Halimi from her apartment window while shouting Koranic verses, so he will not stand trial.

Paris protester called the decision incomprehensible.

This man who killed this poor lady, he’s never going to be judged, you know he’ll stay in a psychiatric hospital and one day he will be out.

While most western nations have laws barring the insane from being held criminally responsible, Halimi’s murder state was brought on by heavy marihuana use, Macron says his government will introduce a law next month, to fill the judicial void that resulted in the decision. In Iraq the number of people who died in a fire at a hospital treating covid patients in Bagdad has risen to at least 80. Among the dead were 28 patients on ventilators battling severe symptoms of the corona virus, officials say the blaze that started there yesterday was caused by an exploding oxygen cylinder, negligence by hospital authorities has been blamed for the fire, the prime minister suspended and fired senior health officials and ordered an investigation. A day after the massive blaze, some relatives were still searching for unaccounted loved ones.

In los angles crews are preparing for this evening’s 83rd academy award ceremony. The Oscars will be held in part at Hollywood’s Dolby Theater but most of the action will be at LA’s union station. As NPR’s Andrew Limbong reports the late Chadwick Boseman is a front runner for best actor.

In the August Wilson's adaptation "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" Chadwick Boseman plays Levee a talented but proud horn player. Boseman stars opposite Viola Davis who’s the front runner for the best actress category, on the supporter side of things Youn Yuh-jung likely to win her role in "Minari" as the tender grandmother to the Korean immigrant family. And Daniel Kaluuya has a decent chance of taking best supporting actor for his role as Fred Hampton in "Judas and the Black Messiah".  Andrew Limbong NPR news.

Crude oil futures are trading slightly lower at 62 dollars 10 cents a barrel. I’m Jeanine Herbst NPR news.
