Emergency work is continuing in Germany at the Benelux countries, which earlier in the week were hit by the worst floods in decades. At least 160 people are known to have died, most of them in western Germany. And officials have warned that more bodies may be found in submerged cars and collapsed buildings.

More than 300 people have been arrested in Ethiopia, accused of supporting rebels in the northern region of Tigray. Reports say some of them have been beaten up and taken hundreds of kilometers from the capital.

A Venezuelan opposition activist has sought asylum in the Chilean embassy after the government started arresting its adversaries, among them the leader and other members of the popular Will Party. Chile says it gave refugee to * at the request of the opposition leader Juan Guaidó.

The Greek authorities are re-imposing an overnight curfew and other restrictions on Mykonos to try to bring a new Covid outbreak under control. The island’s economy is heavily dependent on visitors and the move in the middle of the tourist season has been criticized as misguided.

The French director Julia Ducournau has become the second woman to win one of the film industry’s most prestigious awards the Palme d’Or. She was awarded the prize at the Cannes festival for her movie Titane, an outlandish, grizzly and comic thriller about a serial killer.
