The most senior US general has acknowledged that the Taliban has strategic momentum in Afghanistan and now control half of the districts in the country. General Mark Milley said the American withdrawal was now 95% complete. He said the Afghan army was consolidating its forces and was trying to make sure that the militants didn’t take control of any major population centers.

United States says it has reached a deal with Germany to prevent Russia using the controversial North Stream II gas pipeline as political leverage over Europe. The undersea pipeline will double Russian gas export to Germany. Victoria Newland of the US State Department says the new agreement was a significant step towards protecting Ukraine.

Chinese scientists say climate change is making extreme weather events more likely and more severe, following major floods in Henan province this week. The provincial capital Zhengzhou recorded its highest rainfall in 60 years. Twenty-five people have died across the province.

There are reports that over the last 4 days there has been fighting in Ethiopia’s Afar region, which has caused many people to flee their homes. More than 8 months of conflict between pro-government forces and fighters loyal to the Tigray People’s Liberation Front recently spread to Afar.

The press spokeswoman for the jailed Russian opposition activist Alexei Navalny has been remanded in custody until next January for allegedly breaching coronavirus rules. Prosecutors say Kira Yarmysh created a major disease threat by organizing a pro-Navalny rally, which was attended by 19 people with coronavirus.

And police in Brazil have formally accused 5 players and 3 coaches of Argentina’s Boca Juniors football club of assault and destruction of property. Players were involved in a huge brawl following their defeat to Atletico Mineiro, which knocked them out of the top club competition.
