1.The WHO says preliminary evidence suggest the new COVID variant, first reported in South Africa, carries a higher rist of infection than other variants. The United States has joined the growing number of governments in announcing travel restrictions on several Southern African countries to try to slow the spread of the new variant named [Omicron]. President Biden said Wathington will impose precautionary measures from Monday. South Africa has criticized the restrictions as a [knee-jerk] reaction.

2.The Dutch prime minister M has announced that bars, restaurants and most shops must close from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. from Sunday. He said the tougher restrcitions were needed to prevent hospitals becoming overwhelmed.

4.A Kurdish woman from Northern Iraq is the first victime of the Wednesday's migrant boat diseaster off the coast of France to be identified. M was among 27 people who died while attempting to reach Britain.

5.President Biden has expressed concerns about Russia's troop build-up near the Ukrainian border. He said he was likely to discuss the situation with both countries' leaders. Earlier, the U.S. National Security advisor and senior Ukrainian officials called on all sides to pursue diplomatic efforts to deescalate tentions.

6.A bus that's clashed into a house in Central Mexico killing at least 19 people. The passengers were pilgrims travelling from the state of M to T. Initial reports said the driver seemed to have lost the control of the vehicle after the brakes failed.

7.One of musical theater's most [revered受尊敬的] composers [and lyricists] has died at the age of 91. In a career that spaned more than six decades, he wrote the scores of some of [Broadways] best known shows including [Company, Follies and A Little Night Music].
