The U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, has questioned Kazakhstan’s decision to seek Russian military support in quelling anti-government unrest, saying it might be difficult to get them to leave. Russia says its deployment of troops under a collective security treaty is temporary. Dozens of people have been killed in Kazakhstan during nationwide protests.      

The foreign ministers of NATO’s 30 members say they remain united in their opposition to Russian military aggression against the Ukraine. NATO Secretary General * said the risk of armed conflict in Europe remained real as Russia continued its military buildup near the Ukrainian border.

A court in the U.S. state of Georgia has sentenced three white men convicted of murdering the black man * to life in prison, two of them without the prospect of parole. Mr. * was jogging through a predominantly white neighborhood near * when the trio chased him in their pick-up trucks and shot him.      

The Ethiopian government says it’s freeing several prominent opposition figures as the country marks Orthodox Christmas. The Prime Minister issued a statement calling for national reconciliation after more than a year of conflict with the Tigrayan rebels.        

Germany is further restricting public access to restaurants, bars and coffees to close the spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant. Customers will have to show they had booster vaccination or have tested negative on the day.
